Texans in spotlight as first official day of Olympics begins

The Team USA men's gymnastics team comes to Rio with a whole lot of experience, and they are hungry for revenge.

Houston's own Chris Brooks was an alternate at the London Olympic Games in 2012. That team finished in a disappointing fifth place.

This time around, things are different. Brooks returned to the 2016 Olympics as team captain and will compete in all six all-around events. The five-member squad includes three other Olympic veterans. They've been to this show before, but this time, they're determined to bring home a medal in men's gymnastics for the first time since 2008.

Women's qualification begins Sunday.

It's also a huge day for the men of Team USA archery as they go for gold in Rio.

Their teammate, the only female in the archery group, Texan Mackenzie Brown, took a break from competition to put on her super fan hat and cheer on the guys Saturday.

Brown finished in the top 20 in the women's recurve qualifying round.

"I feel really good," Brown said. "It's my first Olympic games, so I was going in with expectations of doing my best, and that's what I did. I actually had a funny mishap. I broke my sling on one of my shots, but it was still a 10, so we just adjusted and kept going."

Brown is back on the competition field Monday looking to better her standings.
