30th annual Harris County Street Olympic games concludes at NRG Arena

Since its creation in 1987, the Harris County Street Olympics were designed to provide organized athletic activity centered around games that kids play on the streets.

Street Olympics director, Brian Rego, says the games give young people who don't have access to summer activities a chance to play with other kids from all walks of life.

The wide range of games promotes social and physical development, but for the first time this year, the Street Olympics have added chess to the lineup. Chess coach James Hudson, says the game represents the mental side of sports.

The games, of course, are what gets kids in the door, but the hope is that they'll learn valuable life lessons as well.
