2 Day Hill Country Ride interest?

Would there be any interest from some of you to take a 2 day hill country ride in the next few weeks? Tentatively scheduling this ride for the first weekend in Sept. as most have Monday off for the Labor Day Holiday. This will allow for some rest before returning to work on Tuesday. I was thinking about leaving pretty early on a Saturday morning (8 or 9 am) and just heading west out towards San Antonio/Austin. No real route has been determined yet, but I do know of some very SICK roads out towards Bastrop County. This said ride would probably be around 700-800 miles roundtrip and cost you nothing but hotel fees for one night and any food/gas expenses that you may incur. I would like the ride to consist of peeps that have several thousand miles under their belt and have some sort of "hill country/country backroad" riding experience. These roads that I plan on taking can be very spontaneous with a possibility of softball size rocks in the middle of the pavement, cows crossing the roads, etc. Minimal gear would be required i.e. helmet, gloves, jacket, boots (over the ankle) at bare minimum (I will be wearing full leathers). Pack a backpack with all the necessaries (deodarant, toothbrush, bar of soap, travel size shampoo, change of undies, etc.) Please make sure that your bike is mechanically sound.... i.e. fluids topped off/changed, enough tread on your tires, chain lubed, tire pressure, etc. I will try and map something out and give us a "stopping point" for an overnight stay and then continue on a different route making our way back home. I would like to limit the number of participants to 10 and NOONE will be left behind. If interested, sign up here. This will be a spirited ride so make sure you have your sh*t straight. M class, current registration, and insurance are a MUST. There will be a slight chance we will have a run in at some point with Johnny Law, so please keep that in mind. Thanks for looking.....I will solidify plans as the date approaches.

Can I still go

I am in, if Elizabeth doesnt mind. Have you considered, just trailering the bikes up north and just ride the back roads ????

J
that would be a good idea

I have considered, but not looking to trailer (we have done this in the past). I just wanna ride out, hit some nice backroads, and then head back. I don't want to worry about packing coolers, etc. We'll just eat on the fly, stop where we find a cozy place, and continue onward.

"Slight" chance for a meeting with Johnny Law Dog? I don't mind spirited riding in the twisties and back roads, but are you thinking of making "good time" on the freeways?
Those darn DPS Troopers are Arseholes.

I plan on spending minimal amounts of time on highway riding. This is going to be a backroad ride....highway speeds are +/- 15mph at tops. And, not that it means anything, but my future father in law is a fairly well known retired trooper out west....he spent 30 years in the dept. Highway cops are the least of my concern....I just don't like the ones that creep up on ya when you hit that crest over the hill at 65 mph

Cool. Might come in handy to name drop if it comes down to it. Does he ride?

If you're thinking budget trip I'm in, but I've got to keep it reasonably priced and that's assuming my lady agrees that I need to 'get away'

I am already planning on going the following weekend... not in town for Labor Day weekend, and I imagine it will be crowded up there anyhow.

Trailer? Heck it isn't but about 230 miles to Fredericksburg... at jimmyspeed that is about 1.5 hours max, huh? LOL!

He doesn't ride, but he spent a lot of his time travelling to different "regions/districts" teaching classes and such so many folks know him....I can't count the number of times my fiance' has been stopped and let off....luckily, I haven't had to drop his name yet.

As for TxLurch, thanks for the PM invite, but I can't spare a Friday and Monday off of work and as it is planned now, I am CW/riding on 9/10 at TWS (Texas World Speedway):icon_bigg so that poses a problem....But, like you said, no need to trailer out there as I don't plan on going as far as Leaky/Bandera, however, that trip is being planned as an invite only for sometime in October (and we will be trailering out that weekend). This ride will be minimal expenses...., if want to eat McD's all weekend and just pay for your gas and portion of hotel room, one would think you could do it for around 100 bucks.

I may be down if you think I'm comfy/experienced enough for such a ride. I'll be trailering since i will probably keep heading west after the weekend.(possible move)

You're describing my favorite kind of ride....exploring. But I like these better alone that with a group.

I'd recommend knowing where you are gonna stay in advance to take advantage of internet special rates and the security of having a reservation on Labor Day weekend.

I'd shoot for just past Austin, if it were my trip. Maybe hit New Braunfels, Lime Creek Road, 2222, Mount Bonnell, Barton Springs, and everything between 71 and 290 on the way there, north of 290 thru Independence on the way back.

I think with 500-600 miles ridden you could see twisy's, lakes, hills, rivers, Austin, and find a nice Motel or similar on the west side of Austin.

Good luck with the trip!!

P
