Daily Craig: 22 years ago today
On this day in 1994 I was sitting in the National League dugout in Pittsburgh. The kind of old and moldy Three Rivers Stadium was home to the All-Star game. I went through the tunnel with the big boys and stepped aside as the starters made their way to the field to warm up. The Houston connection was solid. The Astros were all over the place. Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Ken Caminiti, Doug Drabek, and John Hudek were all in uniform. As it turned out Baggs went 2-4, Biggio was nothing out of one but scored a vital run late in the game. Cammy only got one at bat and flew out to left. The pitchers got roughed up. Drabek gave up four runs but only one was earned. Hudek gave up one hit and two runs, both earned.
What struck me the most about the game was how good it was and how many soon to be Astros were involved. Randy Johnson gave up the lead while pitching for the Americans. He would later become a rented Astro. Moises Alou starred for the EXPOS and would become an Astro. Another soon to be Astro, Doug Jones of the Phils, was the winner as the NATIONALS CAME FROM BEHIND TO WIN 8-7 IN 10 innings.
I believe, however, the biggest reason it was fun was it aired on Channel 2 and Craig Biggio ran over to me to be on air right after the NL scored the winner in the bottom of the 10th. Of course, the all-time highlight was being able to eat at a very fashionable restaurant dressed in a tee shirt and shorts. The city of Pittsburgh didn't stand on ceremony when it came to large dinner tabs. Plus, how could I not be excited about getting three round trips through the SQUIRREL HILL TUNNEL. That was cool.
