Safety Warning for Traveling

Saw this on another forum. Scary stuff.

Quote:
I also read and post over on AdvRider and picked up on a story on Friday that just really enrages me. I chose that word because it is the politest terminology I can muster to describe my reactions.

Basically, a missing person's detective who rides and posts at AdvRider posted up about a friend of his who went missing on a cross country trip. It did not end well.

OPís post on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, posted in the JoMomma section of AdvRider by inmate CSI

Title: Friend Missing

Larry checked into the Super 8 on Monday evening. Spoke to his wife at about 8:30, and told her he would be heading home to Pittsburg Ks the next morning. He was on his way home from a M/C Forum gathering in the Pigeon Forge area.

She called his cell the next morning, and got no answer. Finally, she called the hotel and the Sikeston Mo PD, who found his room locked. All of his belongings, minus one shirt and a pair of jeans were still in the room. Shoes, helmets, phone, I-pad.....everything still there....including his motorcycle key.

A check of the parking lot revealed that his bike was also missing.

It is thought that he walked outside in the middle of the night, and interrupted the theft of his motorcycle.....whoever is involved took both the bike and Larry.

Larry retired from Pittsburg (Ks) State University last year, and was enjoying his retirement....please keep your eyes open in the Sikeston, Missouri area.

And a later post by the OP -

He had been at a forum related motorcycle gathering in the Smokey Mountains.....there were photos taken, and as people who were with him in the Smokies were identified, photos were shared with the Sikeston PD.....one of the shirts he was wearing in the photos taken is gone.
This did not end well as the rider in question was found murdered.

Here is a link to the story at the local television station

http://www.kfvs12.com/story/32328815...ear-old-ks-man

The best speculation is that he heard something and got up and surprised the thieves and they either killed him on site, or knocked him out and later killed him at the place where he was found.

Either way, the rider was killed by a couple of crack heads and now he is gone, and a family is left without a husband and father.

Of course you can be killed anywhere. I just thought this was relevant because we have members that make several long distance trips a year and park their bikes outside of motels that don't sound much different from the one in the story. I also think that people that ride to their destination instead of trailer are more likely to think, "Holy ! That's my way home!" and rush headlong into a confrontation.

Or wedge your bikes behind a truck and a trailer.

Buy insurance, buy plane ticket home, cash insurance check and buy a new bike.

But having said that I would probably be one to confront the thieves. Human nature I guess, fight not flight.

If I could I would and I'd admit it. But I know if faced with that happening I would jump in by reflex and no way to stop myself. Now if I looked outside my hotel window and saw a large posse each holding iron, different story. But a couple punks trying to push away my I'd be in their face.

only downside is that not every state recognizes the 2nd.

Its a damned sad state of affairs when it cost more to get out of ridding the world of then it does replacing he bike. :(

Yes, they caught the three guys who stole his bike and then killed him.
The motorcycle owner made so many mistakes its sad. Confronted three guys late at night while unarmed. Climbed into the trailer with his bike when they drove off. Climbed into the truck bed and beat on the truck top until they pulled off onto a side road then beat him severely, tied him up and left him to die.
