Netiquette - Forum Etiqutte

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette#Forum_etiquette

Certain rules of unspoken etiquette are recommended to be followed when using Internet forums. They include:

* One should read all the rules and guidelines established by the community. Some communities may have different regulations on a particular subject.
* One should always be courteous to other forum members.
* Before creating a new topic thread, one is advised to search to see if a similar topic already exists.
* Contributors should follow standard grammar and spelling rules and avoid slang. Leetspeak is sometimes accepted.
* If the forum is categorized, one should strive to post in the correct section.
* When making a technical inquiry, one should include as much technical information as possible, especially in the subject line.
* Contributors are asked to stay on-topic.
* Contributors should avoid double posting and Crossposting.
* To avoid appearing self-absorbed, one should respond to topics started by others more often than starting topics of one's own.
* Contributors should avoid the use of all CAPITAL LETTERS in posts. ALL CAPS is considered "shouting" and causes readability issues.
* One is advised not to resurrect a very old topic if nothing significant will be added. This practice is known as revival, bumping or Necroing.
* One should try to refrain from lashing back at a poorly behaving member or participating in a flame war; instead, notify the messageboard's staff of the event.
* When quoting a previous post, one should only include the relevant portion of that post. Contributors are requested to keep in mind that their audience can likely still see the message they are quoting on the same screen and can read it again if need be.
* Signatures on forums should generally have a maximum height of 100 pixels, as to not cause clutter.

That is all.

That would probably fall under the first one. Solracer has laid down the law on that one.

Agree 100% on these specific points. LOL.

Another helpful video (maybe a repost here, who knows)...

* Contributors should follow standard grammar and spelling rules and avoid slang. :icon_bigg:laughing6

* To avoid appearing self-absorbed, one should respond to topics started by others more often than starting topics of one's own.

And, by implication, not deviate from those topics that others present. I've thought about this before--at length--while smoking and watching the squirrels frolic in the yard. I get the idea behind it and understand it, but it's terribly linear, not very fluid. I'd never visited or posted on a board before MH and the temptation is to try and connect with people in that comfortable, chatty sitting-at-Denny's-having-smokes-talking-about-midnight-philosophy
-mixed-with-day-to-day-horror kinda way.

I know the board was created for motofolks to discusss mototopics, but too much form following function stifles bonding (can't think of a word that won't elicit harrassment, so go ahead: I'm prepared :icon_bigg).

I guess I'm railing against--though not really because, honestly, I'm too polite for it, except that I'm doing it but in a wholly amiable way--is the tendency to discourage the community from chasing rabbit holes and allowing synapsis to fire and lead to unexpected discussion. I just like the whole person presents scenario A which leads to discussion B, together they discover C and come back to a new A. I know that freedom comes with responsibility because, frankly, some of these rabbit holes should have concrete poured down them. . .but, is it so bad to stray from the path? Is it really poor etiquette?

Oh yeah, here's the disclaimer: I've partaken in my "yearly whiskey worming," and I know this is going to read like gross inarticulate superficiality in the morning, but I just wanted to post out while the topic was timely. I know the chatter causes the mods a lot of trouble, but it's what makes MH so vibrant. And if this bogs down too much, perhaps a kind soul out there will transliterate it into slang for me. :laughing6

S'okay Mr. Arturo. Here's a secret: there's a vast difference between typo and functionally illiterate.
