Daily Craig: I salute

Memorial Day salutes those who died in our various wars. We have had quite a few. I salute those who are now gone and that includes seven in my Marine Platoon. It was almost 50 years ago I ENLISTED and didn't give much thought to what might happen. I was lucky as nothing really serious happened to me. I will make my yearly visit to the Vets National resting place here in Houston.

My faith in America's youth was restored on three fronts. A 24-year-old rookie, Alex Rossi, WON THE INDY 500. It was the 100th running of the race that yearly sets a record for most fried chicken consumed and most beer drank before 11am. Rossi broke down in tears when he was towed into VICTORY LANE. He realized his income tax was going to go through the roof. He thanked car owner Bryan Herta and NAPA AUTO PARTS. I think wearing an IRS CAP would have been a better move.

Jordan Spieth won the Colonial in Ft. Worth. There were some who doubted the 22-year-old still had the touch. He does. His more than $1 million dollar pay day will also be touched by the IRS. I can say without question when I was 22 I didn't make enough to bother with the IRS. I will make no more mention of that governmental collection agency. I wouldn't want to bring attention to myself. That is exactly why I HAVE NEVER won the Indy 500 or the Colonial. I also have never drawn an MLB paycheck.
The restaurant we were in Sunday broke out in cheers when Carlos Correa hit his homer in the 13th. We must be turning into a baseball town after all.
