I don't know why people think communicating over the internet is different from a phone or face to face. It's still human to human interaction. You act like an in person, you get beat down. Do it online, you're gonna get beat down. No difference.

Driving 1300 miles to deliver the beating is a bit absurd. You would think that somewhere around mile 50 he would have calmed down enough to think straight and turn around. Anger management?

The medium of communication is not the issue, the problem is the mentality of the individuals involved.

Right, that's my point.

Part of it was directed at the thread title, and part of it at all the times i've seen "it's just the internet" here on MH.

The phrase ("It's just the internet") functions as a subconcious reminder.

Why should whats said in person (particularly from a stranger) have any more impact or power?

The basic idea here is, don't say things on the internet you wouldn't say in person. It's my rule anyway. Oh, and acting a fool just might get your kicked.

"He lost everything — all over an Internet squabble," the investigator said.

Hope it was worth it.

You can't take anything that's said over the i-net too seriously. For one thing it's hard to read 'tone' over the internet. Too easy to misconstrue the message.

+++++1. I think the "internet persona" of someone is what they are really like inside. Why would you want to intentionally start drama for no reason? Then when faced with the consequences of your reactions you get insulted, hurt, humiliated, etc. Boggles my mind.
