Dont waste your time arguing with these guys Miloman. They are what they are. It was a foolish decision to run from the police and it cost him his life. Calling him a dumbass is counter-productive. RIP.

I'm guilty for running from the law and guess what, I was a dumbass for doing it. I could be this guy, all laid out and dead because I was too cool to stop and accept defeat. No mistakes was made here, just a quick decision to make a quick run for it and now he's gone forever. Why can't we call this guy a dumbass? Why does it need to be accepted, that it may/may not be ok to do dumb things? If we don't criticize then people will think it is ok and then we are generalized as being the ones who promote these sort of things... We have fun. We speed. We stunt. We race. We make mistakes... but we don't do dumb things that will intentionally put everyone in harms way.

He was a idiot and he got what was coming for him. I feel legitimately sorry for the driver of the 18 wheeler, the police, all the people who had to deal with scraping him off the pavement, and the people who had to put up with the traffic created by him. I do not feel even remotely sorry for him. Did he deserve to die? No, I highly doubt he deserved it. But he did make his own bed and for that, I have no sympathy, especially given that he could've easily hurt or killed innocent people.

One less on the road.

I think I can explain some of the psychology of why we riders often call guys that do things like this one, dumbasses.

Chuck Yeager, in his autobiography talked about being a test pilot at Muroc Field, now Edwards Airforce Base. He and the other test pilots were constantly testing the latest airplane designs in flight profiles that took them to their limits. Every day.

Some times things would go wrong, usually the plane would crash and the test pilot would die. These guys were all the best and brightest pilots available but when somebody, "augered in" (slang for crashed and died), the other test pilots, even their friends would say, "That happened because he was a dumbass".

They knew well he wasn't a dumbass but they said that to themselves and each other because they had to believe, if they had been in his plane, they would have made it back.
I think we all feel that, considering the stupid we have done and lived, considering that we have a passion to ride bikes and they can be dangerous, we have to convince ourselves that people in the news dead on the road are dumbasses. That we would have done better, that we would have lived.

Either that or they actually ARE dumbasses....

If this guy had run, lowsided, run on foot, then been tackled by a cop, there would be no argument about whether or not he was a dumbass. Why does being dead change that?
