Spies in MotoGP 2009 - 100% done deal!!

Ben Spies says Suzuki 2009 MotoGP deal is already done

By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
26 July 2007 09:49

Reigning American superbike champion Ben Spies reckons heís already landed a seat in Suzukiís factory MotoGP squad for 2009.

The 23-year-old told MCN in Laguna Seca that he plans to do as many as four wild card rides next season in preparation for his í09 switch.

Ideally Spies wants to switch to MotoGP next season, but that seems unlikely with a planned satellite team run by American legend Kevin Schwantz not materialising with the Japanese factory refusing to run a third GSV-R in 2008.

And with Chris Vermeulen signing a new deal in Laguna Seca and Loris Capirossi expected to join him, Spies admits his factory ride hopes would have to be put on hold.

ďIím signed with American Suzuki for next year and if I did anything next year it would have to be with the Rizla team. And I donít really know whatís happening next year, but worse case scenario I know Iíll be doing a few wild cards and iní09 going there. 2009 is 100% and next year is kind of 50-50 right now,Ēsaid Spies.

Spies has previously been reluctant to quit America but now reckons heís ready to make the switch.

ďI definitely do kind of have the GP drive now and I think I can do it, ďsaid Spies, who has an aversion to flying. ďThereís no getting around it. I donít really like it, but I think when I spend about 400 hours in a plane in a year Iím going to get over that pretty quick. If I want to go try to be the rest or race with those guys Iíve got to do it. And I donít want to be 35-years-old kicking myself in the teeth because I didnít go do it. If I get the chance, I got to go.Ē

Spies could even get a wild card ride in Valencia at the end of this season and he added: ďIíd like to do one wild card this year and Iíd love to do both American rounds next year and Valencia. Iím kind of itching to get on it. If I donít get to race the thing next year they want me on it as much as possible. They seem really open and really interested. They want to kind of work me into it.Ē

Sounds like HE is 100%, but nothing concrete is in place other than wild cards?

I don't follow AMA much... but I hear that Spies is pretty talented... but how do you think he will fare on a GP ride and on Euro tracks where all the others have done well... do you think he would do as good as Vermi? Vermi was lucky b/c he experienced the 1K before the .8K... Spies doesn't... Also, I read that riding the 1K was more of a squaring technique of riding while riding the 800 is focused on corner speed... For those that seen Ben riding... how is his corner riding skill compared to the GP guys?

Well, JB of Yamaha said that a good rider can ride with the problem... but world champions can adapt and adapt very quickly...

Sure there are plenty of GP riders that got up from 1K racing... but they are not as successful as riders from the quarter class where they already know the tracks...

BTW, I think CMRA's Jr. Motard is a great program... Europe trained their Danis and Marcos from this technique... Is there a chance for CMRA to have a spec class racing as well? For the slightly older kids... so be good training ground before doing the Red Bull program..

The problem isn't going to be riding the bike so much as learning the circuits... it'll be a good 2 years before he's competitive at any of the tracks he's never ridden.

Learning a new bike (which requires completely different riding style than his current bike) and new tracks is NOT a formula for success.

I can't wait to see him in the mix. I wish it was next year. You know the funny thing. I looked at the times between the MotoGP guys at LaGuna vs AMA Superbike......Spies times were very close to the mid pack guys.

Don't jump my bones cause I didn't take notes...... But I believe he was running 1:23's maybe even a 22?

I understand that LaGuna is the type of circuit where you can only apply so much power before your in the next turn. Its hard to open the bike up. Like Oak Hill. Also the new GP bikes corner Fn amazing!!! My point is I belive Spies is running the pace times of last years GP machines on a production bike. Which is impresive to me. Not to say he won't he his handed to him when he come to GP the first 2 years but I just wanted to point that out.

I think the big talk should be about Nicky's brother. Which we should start a new thread on. It's more current and very impressive!
