New deterrent to illegal riding

NYPD will televise crushing of confiscated bikes

NEW YORK police are planning to crush hundreds of non-road-legal bikes and quads that have been confiscated from their owners in an effort to battle a growing craze for riding dirt bikes on the road.

The New York Post reports that during the first quarter of this year alone the NYPD has seized 312 illegal bikes, more than twice as many as in the same period last year. Now it’s planning to destroy them and broadcast the carnage.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the scheme on Monday. Di Blasio said: “We are going to crush them on TV to make a point.”

Bratton confirmed it, saying: 'We will, a little later this spring, have a big crush-in, where we intend to takes all of these things and crush them.'

The increased seizures come thanks to a crackdown on illegal riders, with police waiting at fuel stations to catch riders. However, they are trying to avoid chasing them, acknowledging the potential danger.

Large groups of bikes riding in New York, often on non-road-legal dirt bikes or quads, have been a growing problem. Two years ago they made international headlines when a huge group of bikers got into a fracas with Range Rover driving banker Alexian Lien. That event led to one rider being paralysed after he was struck by Lien’s car. Lien himself was assaulted by several riders and eventually eleven were convicted, including an undercover NYPD detective who was jailed for taking part in the attack.
