Victory to enter Project 156 and Empulse RR at Pikes Peak
Empulse RR to compete in the electric class while Project 156 makes its return to the famed course
VICTORY has announced that it’ll be entering two bikes in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June this year - Project 156 and the Empulse RR.
The Project 156 race bike, which gets its name from the number of bends on the 12.42-mile long Colorado course, will make its return to the mountain this year alongside the Empulse RR electric bike, which competed in the TT Zero at the Isle of Man in 2015.
Project 156 will be ridden by Jeremy Toye, the 2015 Pikes Peak Heavyweight Champion. Toye says he is looking forward to beginning testing in mid-April and commented: ‘I cannot wait to experience Project 156 for myself.’
Don Canet, road test editor at US publication Cycle World, will ride the Empulse RR in the electric motorcycle class. Canet, who has entered Pikes Peak twice before (last year on the Project 156 bike) said: ‘It’s been said that the third time is a charm. Having now had a leg over the Victory electric prototype racer, I’m very optimistic about our prospects upon returning for a third go on America’s mountain. Pikes Peak is an ideal venue for an electric powered bike to showcase its performance potential.’
Testing of the Empulse RR electric prototype has already begun and team manager, Brian Wismann said: ‘The Victory Racing team is pleased to have successfully completed our first test in our journey back to challenge Pikes Peak on its 100th anniversary. We wanted to get our racer some familiarity with the power delivery, handling and nuances of racing an electric motorcycle and we were able to accomplish that and more. It’s really a testament to Don’s abilities that he was able to show up at a track he’s never ridden before, throw a leg over an electric bike he’s never ridden before and go as fast as he did ‘out of the gate’. We’re looking forward to the next test when we really start to fine-tune our set up to tackle the mountain!’
This year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the event’s centenary, and will feature approximately 100 competitors ascending 4,720ft (1,440m) as they race to cross the finish line at the top of the mountain.
