Daily Craig: Ladies and Gents, start your brackets

It is finally Madness. The selection show was late yesterday afternoon and the run for NGR here In Houston is on. The usual teams are considered to make room reservations in our city. I have had quite a few chances to cover this event in person and I am in double figures in that category. My first goes back to 1976. Indiana won it all and is still the last team to stay unbeaten through the regular season and the men's tourney. In fact that year was the last year the tourney had 2 unbeatens make it to the FINAL FOUR. Rutgers was the other and they lost to Michigan in a semi final in Philadelphia.

Indiana started it's run in Baton Rouge. THEY BEAT St.John's and Marquette to get to the Final 4. The Catholics weren't happy. With only 32 teams in the field 2 wins in regional play and you were on to the BIG SHOW. In 1976 the country celebrated 200 years and Philly got to also host the NBA All Star game, the NHL All star game, and the MLB All Star game. I think any fan named Ben Franklin got in all the games for nothing.

THE HOOSIERS beat UCLA in one semi final and that meant they played Michigan for the 3rd timeTHAT SEASON and IU WON THE FINAL OVER MICHIGAN 86-68. It was my first year working at ch. 6 in Indy and i had a very nice relationship with BOB KNIGHT. He sent me an autographed book after that season. I treasure it. I just can't find it.

The top overall seed this time is KANSAS. They play Austin Peay to start the tourney. Years ago Austin Peay had one of the leading scorers in the country in FLY WILLIAMS. The student body came up with one of the all time great cheers."Fly is open, let's go PEAY. " I rest my case.
