Well, if you can find a junk tailgate from the pick-u-part, this sounds like an awesome idea. You could just swap tailgates when you want to take the bike out.

wow, is it THAT big of a deal to put the tailgate down? i've never understood people's need or fascination with "getting the tailgate up"

you're not hauling the bike in the back forever...it should really be a short trip, and if the bike is properly tied down its a non-issue.

i quite like the tail-gate down, it gets slightly better gas mileage, i've heard.

If that is a spare tailgate, that's pretty cool. Just run a strap through the wheel to keep it forward and the tailgate keeps it from falling over
