sure, I can get a 2008 kawasaki Concours 1400 for less than that, with 2 sets of spare tires.

Whats wrong with the carb? my ninja 250 was carb'ed and it ran for days, different bike tho i know. not apples to apples but still the carb is still highly used, lots of LSX builds where guys rip the EFI off and put a carb on.

They get gummed up unless you ride them constantly?

Maybe the newer carbs have solved this to a certain extent. I haven't had any issues with my small boat motor yet, but it's still less than two years old. Ironically that's when kymco's warranty expires lol
