Help a noob out?

I just got back into riding, and I recently picked up a 2009 Ninja 650r. It's in great condition, but the tires are OEM and old, and I don't feel confident riding with them.

So, where do people recommend going to buy/install a pair of tires?? I've been told that taking the whole bike to a shop instead of just the wheels is expensive...any suggestions for a cheap-ish place to do this?

(The seller gave me a rear stand with the bike, but sadly I have zero mechanical know how and I'm worried i'd #^@$ up something if I try to take off the rear tire. Also I don't have a front stand)

Thanks guys

I will do your tires for free and show you how to do it in the future...buy your tires off of ebay and have them sent to my house...ride out here and we will put them on if you can make it to Brenham...if you get here early enough after we are done we can scrub your tires in on the great curvy roads...

I'm not on the west side, but my tires are the cheapest in town and as cheap as any online store! You might try Wild West Motoplex in Katy.

That's an incredibly nice offer! Brenham is a far ride for me. If I can't find a place closer, i'll definitely take you up on that, if you're still willing to help by then..thanks a lot!!

Cycle Shack North in Conroe. I'll PM some tire prices and labor for you. Sorry for the slow response, it has been extremely busy with the nice weather today.

Pretty much every dealership has tires. They'll work with you on price if you pester them. The recommendation for Motorcycles Unlimited is great; they're along 1960 near I-45 on the North side, so it's quite a far drive but they'll do only & exactly what you pay for without f###ing anything else up - and so far they're the only shop in town with that reputation.

Now let me tell you about Wild West (Honda/Kawasaki) "Motoplex". That's where I bought my first bike. The thought of going to jail is the only thing that kept from either burning their shop down or stalking their manager's home and killing him and his entire family. The salesman I talked to didn't know squat about bikes - literally, I was looking at an older one with a carburated engine, and he had no idea how to set a choke. He balked about 20 minutes when I asked him to start it up, even though I had cash and was ready to buy. Even after he got the keys, it still took him another 20 minutes to get it cranked up because of the choke issue. Their sales manager wouldn't budge on the price, so I had to put it on layaway. When I went in to make the first payment I again asked them to crank it up, since it had issues the first time and I wanted to make sure I was buying a bike that actually ran. I got referred to the GM who shook my hand, put a hydraulic-powered cyborg deathgrip on my hand (it hurt!!!) and told me that "I don't run his shop, I don't tell him what to do, and if I don't like the way they do business I can take my business elsewhere."

I ended up getting the bike anyway because I wanted a specific one and they were the only shop in town that had one. The day that I paid it off and went to pick it up the same GM kicked it over, and even though they paid for the repairs I still had to wait another week+ to pick it up.

So screw that place.

PS - bring on the accuasations of slander. This site has my IP address. Sue me. I dare ya.

WOW, I always have had great service from Wild West, their service dept. is a little expensive and pretty strict on how they proceed, but their work has been flawless! The sales dept. has sold me several new bikes that I have been very happy with the price and make ready. The parts dept. was and is still a great go to place that has taken care of me for many years.

BD#270 is also super knowledgable and his experience is hard to beat!

Mancuso SW has also given me fantastics support buying bikes too, thank you Carlos!

for all the many places to have work done on a bike, in the rare occasion that I cant do it myself, I would trust Wild West.

As far as getting a good deal on tires BD & WW has done ME the best, and as far as tire changes go well I just...

shops don't kill bikes, people do.
