Rossi frustrated with lack of laps
The Italian states tyres are important to test due to demanding Phillip Island circuit
FRUSTRATION for Valentino Rossi and the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team as they were unable to begin any testing schedules at Phillip Island due to the weather conditions.
The first day of the Phillip Island MotoGP test has proved challenging for all riders and teams due to the intermittent changes in weather. After two hours of waiting for the weather to improve, Rossi ventured out of his pit box to complete several laps in the wet.
Plans to test the new Michelin tyres at the demanding Phillip Island track had to be put aside due to the weather, so Rossi and his Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team used the time to assess when the new intermediate tyre may be of use in the future.
During the final hour of the test a dry window appeared where Rossi set a 1:33.088 to end the day in sixth.
'It‘s very positive to come here to Phillip Island because we have a lot of different things to try, especially tyres and we know this track is always very demanding for the compound,' said Rossi. 'Unfortunately we expected summer, but it‘s winter.
'Today the season changed a minimum of ten times, we had to wait a lot and it was quite frustrating because it was important to do some work, but we didn‘t do a lot of laps. We were able to do some wet laps and also some dry laps at the end. We hope that tomorrow and Friday the weather will become better.
'It‘s always difficult to find the right window to use the intermediate tyre, but it can help. In the past, with the slick, it was quite dangerous to go out in half and half conditions.
'I think this year we can use the time more effectively, but here in Phillip Island the feeling with the bike and the tyres changed a lot compared to last year, so we need to work; every track can be different.'
Rossi was also able to compare both the 2015 YZR-M1 and the 2016 version in wet conditions, but unfortunately no part of their testing schedule could be completed nor any improvements made.
