A wasted day for Crutchlow
Improvements needed in terms of power and the electronics
BRITISH MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow has described the first day of the Phillip Island test as 'wasted' as rain stops play.
LCR Honda and rider Crutchlow were unable to follow through their initial test plans for the first day of the Phillip Island test due to rain showers.
The picturesque Phillip Island circuit, which lies to the south of Melbourne, is well known for its sketchy weather conditions due to its cliff top location and today proved to be no different.
Crutchlow did manage to squeeze in two laps on slick tyres when the track briefly dried, setting the fifth fastest time of the day in the process. However, no sooner had he set his fast lap that the drizzle returned.
His fastest time was a 1:32.948 which he set on his 21st and final lap, 1.184s off the pace of Danilo Petrucci who topped the timesheets.
'Today was pretty much a wasted day,' commented Crutchlow. 'We waited around a lot, but there wasn’t really much we could do with the weather situation.
'We kept going out with the rain tyre but then the track would dry up too much. Towards the end we put on the slicks and then it started to rain so we didn’t get any real information from the dry tyre at all. Even in the two laps I did I could tell we still have some way to go in terms of the power of the bike and the electronics.
'We were quite happy with the situation in the rain, but now we need to work very hard overnight and then going into tomorrow we will have a lot of different things to try. Hopefully the weather is better as is forecasted. I love riding this circuit, so it would be good to enjoy a full day’s testing here.'
A positive of the poor weather meant that Crutchlow and the LCR Honda team had chance to test and understand the Magneti Marelli electronics and the Michelin tyres in wet conditions.
Crutchlow had fairly positive feedback from the wet tyres as working on the 2015-spec factory Honda engine was halted due to the weather situation. Tomorrow the team will try the updated 2016 engine as weather conditions are predicted to be better.
