Jorge Lorenzo set his fast time of the day before the lunch break.

Reigning MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo hit the ground running and topped the time sheets on day one of the first pre-season test at Sepang International Circuit. The Movistar Yamaha riderís 2:00.684 on Michelins and with the spec ECU impressed, as it was just .078 of a second off of his fast time in last yearís race.

Most of the riders spent the first day of the three-day test working on the electronics and getting used to the new tires. The consensus was that the Michelins had improved over the winter break and it showed on track with far less front end crashes than last yearís first outing at Valencia.

Also, the Yamaha techs clearly did their homework with the spec ECU, earning a 1-2 finish on the first day of the new year. Valentino Rossi improved his time in the afternoon to move up to second, trailing his teammate by 1.033 seconds.

Valentino Rossi made it a Yamaha 1-2 finish on the first day of testing at Sepang. The Italian sported a special winter themed helmet for the test.

Repsol Hondaís Dani Pedrosa held off a bunch of Ducatis to end the day third, while his teammate Marc Marquez struggled in seventh.

Danilo Petrucci also made quite the impression on the first day back to work in 2016. The Octo Pramac Yachnich Ducati rider was fourth and the top Duc of the day on the GP15. Factory Ducati rider Andrea Iannone was fifth ahead of Avintia Ducatiís Hector Barbera.

Petrucciís teammate Scott Redding was eighth. Rounding out the top 10 was Team Suzuki Ecstarís Aleix Espargaro and LCR Hondaís Cal Crutchlow.

Aspar Ducatiís Eugene Laverty ended his test at Sepang early with a big crash in turn four that injured his right wrist.
