FM 149 (Forest) Road Work

FYI - The road work signs are up and construction has begun on FM 149 through the Sam Houston National Forest from FM 1097 to FM 1791.

Sections of pavement are being repaired starting at FM 1791 and working south to FM 1097. Once this is complete, major earthwork and some tree clearing begins to add wide shoulders on both sides. The last step is to seal coat and repave all 10 miles with 1.5 inches of asphalt. The project is scheduled to be complete by February 2017 and cost $1 million per mile.

It looks like the entire road surface will not be reverted to gravel during construction like in most rural areas. However, some gravel and heavy machinery may be encountered on FM 149. Watch for edge traps (uneven pavement), too.

Also: be aware traffic fines double in work zones. Going 30 mph over the speed limit in the Forest may get you a $610.00 ticket and a visit with Judge Mack.

149 was fine last Sunday. They have laid sections of new asphalt.

Last Sunday afternoon, the Northbound side of 149 was just like it has been for quite a while, but the southbound side had numerous patched areas, mostly on the straightaways. Those were new asphalt, and some of the gravel was still a little loose. Not a bad job done, but definitely needed to go easy on the throttle and brakes.
