so i got my beater running!

the carbs were a lil dirty, one of the mains had some rust clogged in it. about 50% blockage id guess. turned out that wasnt the probem though...after i got it cleaned and put back in the bike, it STILL didnt want to start. well after sleeping on it for a night, i was thinking fuel filter...

i went to check it and when i pulled it off a little fuel came out, and i could blow through it...seemed ok to me...till i thought about it. only a LITTLE fuel came out. should have poured out. no gas was getting through the petcock.

i took off the petcock and tested it. i couldnt blow through it. i took it apart, cleaned it and put it back together. still didnt want to work right. i put it back together, minus a spring and it seemed to work perfect. weird. tried it with the spring, no worky. really weird. put it on the bike without spring, and i got the bike to run, but only on prime. took it off one more time, put the spring back in and tested it.

seems like you just have to be careful when turning the petcock or it valves dont open right. once i got it back on and carefully moved the valve as needed it worked GREAT. the bike starts like a charm and i was suprised how much pickup the little 500 has.

im still suspicous of the petcock, so im gonna replace it with an aftermarket one from pingel that is supposed to work better. other than that, i just gotta put on some fresh grips and change the oil and itll be good to go.

FYI it would have costed any normal person about $1200 to make this bike rideable and safe like i have. the bike is worth maybe $1000 at most, LOL. this isnt even factoring in the fact that so far it has no title!

i get a great discount on parts, and did all the work myself. so it cost me like $350.

add to that its not like i got a free gsxr. its a gs500. does 120 top speed, doesnt get there in a hurry like a sportbike either.

story is my old co-worker bought it for $600 and wore it out, put it up wet. i always wanted to buy it from him, but he wouldnt sell. had it sat for another 6 months it might not have even been worth taking for free! only after he wore it out did he decide to let me have it.
