Motorcycle Theft Statistics

The National Insurance Crime Bureau releases motorcycle theft statistics every year, most of which are pretty predictable. For example, California has the most thefts and the most recoveries, more Hondas are stolen and recovered than any other brand, and most of the thefts take place during the summer months. No surprises there.

But just like any (fine, most) government-style report, there are some pretty interesting nuggets of info hiding inside. We combed through the latest report and assemble our top 10 stats, in Harper’s Index style, for you to chew on.
  • Number of motorcycles stolen nationally in 2014: 42,856
  • Number (and percent, nationally) of motorcycles stolen in California, Florida, and Texas in 2014: 13,610 (32%)
  • Percentage change in motorcycle sales between 2013 and 2014: +4%
  • Percentage change of theft nationally between 2013 and 2014: -6%
  • Percentage change of theft between 2013 and 2014 in Las Vegas: +29%
  • Percentage change of theft between 2013 and 2014 in Los Angeles and Indianapolis: -27%
  • Of the 1,973 U.S. counties identified, percentage of thefts that took place in the top 25: 31%
  • Percentage of stolen motorcycles in 2014 recovered through June, 2015: 41%
  • Rate of recovery in the state of New York: 20%
  • Rate of recovery in the state of Hawaii: 98%
