Great trucks I personally have a 2000 f250 Powerstroke and work on these for a living, they are great and get about 18 mpg towing or not they have a very long life work on a couple fleet accounts and have some of them that have 800,000 miles plus and still going strong if u look at NADA the trucks with the gas motors the price crashes at 100 to 150K and the diesels price dont start dropping till they exceed 500K so resale is very good even on high mileage units If u are gonna do any kind of towing there is really no other choice.

my work is about 5 miles away. school is 30 each way but i only go twice a week. i know its not going to get good gas prices but i could really care less. i dont need a vechicle that size but i figure who better then myself to deserve a big nice truck? jk but id really like to drive a diesel truck for some reason.

im not going to be towing anything really

I would wait until the light duty diesels hit the market. I'm looking forward to what ford, toyota, and nissan have in the works. Might be worth the weight.

I have an 04 Dodge 2500 with the cummins engine. Best ever was 21mpg worst was about 17 mpg, my avg around town is 18 mpg. I bought it for the engine, not the truck, I really don't even like dodge, but the engine made it worthwhile.
Same basic engine powers generators, boats, industrial pumps, etc.

The auto tranny leaves a bit to be desired. Go a lil bit beyond stock and you'll need to upgrade the transmission. The 6 speed manual is a bit more stout, and better for pulling the heavy loads.

Maintenance isn't bad either. I change oil at 5k and fuel filters at 7k. No spark plugs or wires to be concerned about. No glow plugs either, grid heater on mine.

I had an '02 F350 crew single rear wheel and traded it for an '01 Excursion limited 4x4.....both were 7.3 powerstrokes.

the '02 got quite a bit better mpg....saw a calculated legit 21mpg with it a few times on the highway on a trip that used a full tank. We got the Excursion cause we could fit 7 people in it comfortably and carry luggage for 7 for a weekend trip and still tow the boat with no problems.

Started to hit the Excursion with mods. (intake, exhaust, 4 position chip etc.) when I had a guy make me an offer to buy it for about $6000 more than I paid for it so I sold it to him.

So then why buy something so huge and inefficient? If you're -bent on driving a diesel, but need a daily driver, then how 'bout something that makes sense for that task like a Jetta TDI?

The old 7.3 diesels get better gas mileage than my 07 5.4 (gas) F150 2wd crew does.
I got a buddy with a 2001 F350 crew 4wd that gets a full 4 mpg better in the city than I do and I drive like a grandpa. Both trucks are stock FWIW.
So the gas mileage shouldn't be as bad as you think.

Have you read about the VW with 650hp? Sure, only a prototype now but VW is planning on getting cool.

If I didn't have to haul a horse trailer or motorcycle trailer, I wouldn't drive a truck. I hate the seating position, I am much more comfortable in a lower sportcar where you are more stretched.

Most folks only drive trucks to either pull or haul something. Diesel would be my choice on the next truck, I couldn't afford it last time around but it makes for much better torque and gas mileage.

Why a Ford Diesel? They are the loudest. Have you ever even driven a Diesel?

Maybe I don't get it but I wouldn't buy a truck unless it was for a real purpose. My next vehicle will be a sportscar for sure, or, if conscience keep knawing away on me, mayyyyyyyybe *caugh* an economy car with 50+mpg but that is what I have the bike for, right? 45mpg.

Well, I grew up in Germany and there was a time where VW wasn't cool at all. Trust me. :laughing6 However, in the last years, it is really looking good. I really love the GTI!

Cool link. That car sure looks sweet!

Oh, yeah, and they have the Diesel (TDI). (to get back on topic)

I heard that the ford is a really great diesel truck. There are other options IF you want something smaller, but that is your call.

I would go Ford all the way, but that is only an opinion.
