$3000.00 Ticket!?!

$3000.00 Ticket!?! Ouch!
I can only see this becoming a more popular way to discourage speeding AND generate income:

http://www.escortradar.com/2007-07-newsletter.htm

Please, no cop bashing, if you're speeding and get caught, well you pay to play. (Boy I'm glad I don't live in Va. though!)
Besides this is our legislators doing it to us.

Yeah, I'm concerned that other states may try to follow suit.

This is just like the red light cameras here in Houston. It has nothing to do with safetey and everything to do with extorting more money from the citizenry.

The theory with the red light cameras is that it is being done for 'safety' not to raise revenue while not allowing a person to face their accuser in court. If the for profit company that gets a cut of the revenue from the red light cameras actually believed that the number of infractions would decrease and people would stop running red lights because of the penalty then that company would never put in the cameras because they would expect nothing but a steadily declining revenue stream from the cameras. In fact they want to put in as many cameras as possible because they know that it will do nothing to modify behavior and stop red light runners and everything to increase their profits (city government included). If they are such a great deterrent to red light running then why don't they post signs where the cameras are to let people know they are there? Wouldn't that make then even more effective as a 'deterrent' (but less effective as a revenue raiser)?

At least the the government in VA is being truthful about their intentions whereas the government in Houston continues to lie about its intentions.

I don't run red lights so it doesn't affect me, but I don't like a government that lies to the citizens in an effort to extort more more money for it to waste.

Sorry if this seems to be a bit of a threadjack.

In some places they now have speeding cameras set up on highways. They function similar to red light cameras and simply ticket everyone who violates the speed limit. IMO this is somewhat of an invasion of privacy, though not explicit enough to warrent legislative action.

I just bought a Solo S2 for my bike, after getting a ticket in the heights. I have a small problem with LEO not considering the situation before writing the ticket, sometimes driving in a pack of cages at the posted limit is more dangerous than speeding away. Am I wrong?

Lorin70, a friend of mine ran a redlight camera here in town and was granted access to a video of his infraction, along with an "information" link.

Here is what it said. Note, they clearly state it is for revenue generation...

Quote:
AUTOMATED RED LIGHT CAMERA ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM

What happens if I ignore the Notice of Violation?

Failure to pay the civil penalty or to contest liability prior to the 45th day after receipt of the notice is an admission of liability, and failure to appear at an administrative adjudication hearing after having requested a hearing is an admission of liability and constitutes a waiver of the right to appeal. Failure to pay the civil penalty within 45 days after receipt of this Notice of Violation shall result in the imposition of a late-payment fee of $25.00. If the second notice continue unpaid, collections proceedings and entry of judgment against you may proceed.

Will I receive any points on my driving record for this violation?

No, this is a civil infraction that is not reported to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

Will my insurance rates be affected?

This is a civil infraction and is not reported to any insurance agencies.
This is only a revenue generating program.

How much is the fine?

The fine is $75.00 for each of the first two offenses, if you have three or more offenses in a 12 month period the fine amount is $150.00 per offense.

How much time do I have to pay my Notice of Violation?

You must pay the civil penalty on or before the 45th day after receipt of your Notice of Violation. The due date for payment is located on the top and bottom right of your Notice of Violation.

City of Houston
Automated Safety Program
Post Office Box 742503
Cincinnati , Ohio 45274-2503

Where can I pay in person?
Houston Municipal Court
1400 Lubbock
Houston , TX 77002-1553

What happens if I do not pay the Notice of Violation?

The City will begin collections of the civil penalty through a collections agency.

Honestly, I think that it is just high enough.. that in time there will be a nice little public out-cry about it.

That's my hope anyway, figure the right set of circumstances.. some city/state officials that get tagged under it and a leo/agency that's not willing to let it slide.

"20 mph over the speed limit will be $1,050". That's rediculous. The punishment should fit the crime.

The red light cameras are unconstitutional. Running a red light is a Misdeameanor as defined by the state. You have the right to face your accuser if charged with a Misdeameanor. The city (in a roundabout way) is choosing to settle out of court by not charging you with a Misdeameanor but charging you $75 (extortion).

1. there are signs telling you there are camera's. i live right by 2 of them.
2. if after you get 1-2-3 tickets i.e. $$$, you don't change your habits, your an idiot.
3. "why don't they make the yellows longer" cuz then people would realize it and eventually start running them. if you had your had in the cookie jar, and your momma didn't spank your hand, you'd do it again and again, till momma finally hit you.

if your not ready to pay the fine, then don't do the crime.
