Solid Struts For My Softail Heritage

So I'm going to convert my softail to a hardtail. The suspension I presently have is located underneath the frame. My plan is to use the Paughco 313D Struts - 11in. w/1/2in. holes, to replace the current air ride system. These solid struts are for Sportsters and are installed vertically running from the swing arm to the rear fender. I will be installing them horizontally from swing arm to frame, because my application is custom and I have a 300mm rear tire. I'll post pictures when I'm done installing and give great details on how it works out for me in a few weeks.

The struts are on backorder

I went ahead and bought some material... looks like I'm going to learn how to weld tonight.

No welding needed. Get a good bar stock and thread the ends. With the heim joints u can adjust ride height.

I was thinking the same thing. Why switch out an air ride system to a hard tail?

Well, my air suspension recently failed on me and my bike will undergo a major rebuild once the weather gets too cold to comfortably ride. The air ride suspension I had was no different compared to a hard tail. It was hard riding from the beginning. The next air ride suspension I'm looking into is this: SAS (Simplified Air Suspension) http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/par...air-suspension

... Anyways, I'm making it a hard tail for the time being so I can enjoy the rest of the fall weather and not spend big bucks only to disassemble it all in the winter.

They sell different sizes. I put my bike on the stand and then put a jack under my rear tire to adjust where I wanted it to sit, then I made my measurements.

I considered this at first, but then I was paranoid that it may bend under pressure/impact because it is not thick enough. So I bought some 3/4" sq. tubing that is 1/8" thick and will weld some SCH40 3/4" pipe at the ends... that's the plan for now at least.

Got them welded! Not the prettiest welds, but it is a good weld!

I'll take the rattle-can to them and install them this evening.

Would anyone know the torque value on the 1/2" bolts that fasten the shocks underneath the Heritage's? Also, I'm replacing the grade 8 bolts with stainless steel bolts... has anyone ever had them gall up on you? If so, what did you do to remedy this?

Got the solid struts installed. I should have went shorter with them, but the fender height is ok looking... I really like when it is slammed and only a 1/4" clearance between the fender and tire. Right now it has an 1-1/4" clearance.

Rode the bike yesterday to work and back home. I must say, without the loose worn out air suspension, it tracked really nice! I typically keep it under 70-75 mph because it starts to get a little wobble, but I had it well past 90 mph without any wobble. The bumps are not as bad and were pretty manageable too. So far, so good!
