Re: First Bike Size

my first sportbike was a 750. However, I was riding it in colorado so it had the "Houston comparable" power of a 600. Take it from someone who chose a larger bike for the first, you really want a 600.

It means I went down more then once. Didnt understand (respect) what the power was on a sport bike, even tho when I test drove it I nearly crapped myself in first gear. I drove on the street like it was a track, lane splitting at 100+ (one time the gap was so tight my g/f's knee was black after sliding down the side of a city bus), shorts and tank top ridin, hangin off the seat - picken up my knee so it didnt hit curbs, etc, etc, etc. I was young, uninformed, and stupid.

After I had taken a few spills I decided to start learning to ride. The bike was gorgeous when I got it....it didn't have much left for plastics when it was sold. Thank I made it out of that stage in my life.

You know I can't tell you that a 600cc will be fine or not. Honestly, its a terrible first bike. Just like all the stuff you already read about why a 600cc sport bike is not the right bike....its all true. BUT, to really be young (27 and younger) and be faced with the thought of not having that "cool" bike is the greatest feat of maturity that you could ever make. I can also say that I, and many others just on this forum alone, didnt pass the maturity test. So for me tell you what the right thing to do is (as if you didnt know this in your heart) really has no meaning since I didn't do it.

What I will say is; get the bike you want, TRY not to ride like a jackass MOST of the time (it would be lying to yourself if you think you wont occasionally), make a commitment to spend your "mod" money on gear, learning, THEN bike. With a little luck, you too can tell stories about being a jackass when you were young and advise bike noobies to start on 250's...

Rant: Don't mean to hope on a soap box but just pay attention to ALL these people telling you what bike you need to get and what they ACTUALLY got when they started....and no, riding for 2 months (exaggeration of 2 days) on your daddy's bike does not put someoene in the "experienced" bracket. /Rant

Re: First Bike Size

Well, heres my two cents.

I actually started on a 90 zephyr 550 LOVED IT didnt really get bored with it

Bought my 88 750 and LOVE it, Ive ridden 1000's, R1's and a load of other new 750s and such,* Im happy with my old school 750, it has around the same HP as a new 600 but with a lil more behind it.

I wont tell you to go out and buy a 600cc bike for your first bike(unless its a yzf600r or old cbr 600f2,) my wreck was due to me not obeying traffic law and my lack of "riding" skills Not, the size of the motor(I could have done the same thing on a 250 or a 1k)

I do however think that less powerful bikes are great to learn on, and will serve you well till you are ready to move up. I wont lie, I have plenty of friends who started on a 600-1k bike, and are just fine(most just buy them for a pimp factor) but I also known alot of people who have started big and are now dead. It happens, its up to you the rider to keep yourself in check at all times, and if you F**K up, its all on you.

Watch this video and sit and think about your purchase.
