Police: Man charged after attempting to extort the Houston Texans
A man is in jail on theft charges after allegedly blackmailing the Houston Texans.
Chaz Davis, 27, appeared before a judge in probable cause court and denied doing anything wrong.
"Ma'am I didn't know selling my phone was against the law," says Davis.
This wasn't Davis's first time in front of a judge though. It appears he has a lengthy criminal history, including possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, and assault on a family member.
On Monday, Davis contacted our assignments desk and other news media in town trying to sell a story about a Texans player involved in illegal activity.
When he realized we weren't interested, he called the Texans.
"Defendant contacted employee of The Houston Texans and told employee that he had photos of one of the players smoking marijuana and some text messages of the player had been communicating with a prostitute," says prosecutor.
Court documents show he threatened to release the information unless he was paid.
"He told this employee in exchange for $3,000, he would agree not to turn it over to the media," says prosecutor.
The Texans employee agreed to meet with Davis in a public place. Court records show Davis signed a contract, and handed over a cellphone which contained the alleged photos. The employee paid Davis the $3,000 he wanted. A short while later, officers arrested Davis. His girlfriend, Allison Marshall, who was with him at the time, was also arrested for having methamphetamine.
