You'd think for that much money they'd do something besides drop a stock engine in it. I've test ridden the VFR and it certainly didn't seem like it had anywhere near the power of a CBR

Nehhh... if they wanted raw power, they probably would have gone with the 1441cc ZX14R mill instead. Folks that would buy this sort of bikes aren't all that interested in having just HP. Same reason-of-being as the Bimotas with Japanese engines - moto exotica, with Honda reliability, oozing panache and character out of every orifice. I'm sure Ariel had a good reason for picking the 1237cc V4 shaftie.
