just rode for the first time

I just bought my R6 today and I brought it from Victoria all the way to Houston. Came up 59 north up to North houston. Man traffic was insane at night on this Friday evening. And since it was my first time riding a sports bike let alone riding period I did awesome. Any tips guys would help. I feel awesome knowing I did so great riding a sports bike. It just felt so natural.

Keep the rubber side down and you'll be ok.

But honestly, don't be in too much of a hurry. Take it slow, don't get a big head just because you're naturally inclined.

Congrats. I'd say, ride a track day, stay safe and always wear your gear.

Freeway riding is easy. I assume you took MSF. Until you can operate your bike subconsciously, riding on the streets with all these texters is dangerous. I commute on a bike every day it's not raining so I know what it's like around these idiots.

Read your owner's manual front to back. Set your cold tire pressure at least once a week. Surface streets and intersections are death traps for bikes. If you join a group ride and there's no rider's meeting, go home or you could end up in a ditch or off an overpass and dead.

My minimum gear is helmet, gloves, armored jacket, boots, knee/shin guards.

Good luck to you

Get comfortable riding your bike before you do a track day.

Preach! Agreed with every single thing you said. Except sometimes I don't wear my knee guards when I'm just putting around town... bad, I know. Gotta' live on the edge sometimes. And hit the nail on the head about the rider's meeting... It's usually a pretty good litmus test for "these guys might know what they're doing" versus "holy these guys may as well be scud missiles".

I need to join you on one of your weekend rides... Everyone says I'd learn a lot.

Assume EVERY MFer in a car/truck/van or anything other than a bike, is out to kill you, and stay clear of them.

Best advice I got early on was ride as if you are invisible. Even when they look right into your eyes. They do not see you. They will pull out in front of you or over into your lane and run you over. So ride as if everyone is going to try and hit you.

Best tip I know of is never ride beyond your comfort level... even if it means you will get lost because you don't know the area. Eventually you will catch back up to the pack. Also, don't try to follow style trends that may hinder your sight, feeling, and ability to move your body freely (i.e. blacked-out visors, dark tinted windshields, novelty helmets, tv screens, over-excessive gear, etc.)... these things will take away from riding comfortably and may cause you to focus more on these things rather than what's in front of you, or around the corner.
