As a Houston rider who occasionally splits, I believe it should be legal. Keep it within five to ten miles over traffic, and within the speed limit and I'm all for it. The research isn't necessarily clear on if it's safer, but it's undeniably more efficient and comfortable. But that's not why I decided to post here.

You guys are arguing over a moot point. The idiot riders who are splitting lanes at highway speeds don't care about the legality of it. They'll do it regardless of the laws. However, the riders who respect the law and aren't complete will utilize lane splitting the way it's intended, without fear of a law that punishes a simple practice.

Now children, does that make sense? Can we play nice now?

For me, the point of making it legal is just to inform the public to not try to purposefully block or run me over when splitting. I have only been pulled over once for splitting and that was from a idiot cop who I foolishly stopped for instead of going.

Running from the po-po's would have been the foolish thing... it's disappointing to know you regret pulling over for the law (regardless if they are idiots or not).

Pulling over isn't exactly how it happened. It was a much dumber act on my part than that. I posted a thread on it I think with a scan of the warning.

You think making it legal means cagers are gonna pay attention or respect the rights of bikers? I've taken defensive driving courses, as well as my licensing for my class c. None of them acknowledge bikers in any real sense. They're not gonna talk about lane splitting.

In the same sense that making open carry legal informed the public that they should expect to see people carrying guns openly in public... Yes. I do think that making it legal means that the public would inform the public so that less people thought it was acceptable to intentionally try to block or injure splitters

288 was a parking lot this morning. I split for a couple of miles through the worst of it. I tried to go slowly and quietly. No one honked or tried to cut me off.

Actually I think I was the second rider. Unless there were even more of us. I ride a red Honda 919. I saw a blue cruiser go by me and that pushed me to give it a go. Although I did wait a few minutes in case anyone did get angry. But like Bevo said, they were probably oblivious.

I've taken to splitting when the cars are stopped or moving at less than half of my idle speed. I will idle between them at 10mph. Some people try to pull in front of me and they really overestimate the amount of room it takes me to get between them and the car next to them. Lots of honking. Don't care
