spam threads/posts

i dont remember how it was when i registered since its been so long, but isnt there a spam filter (type in the text you see here kinda thing)? i know its not gonna keep out actual people from registering adn posting, but do we have that here to keep out the bots? reason i ask is it just strikes me as strange that MASSIVE amount of spam we get on such a locally based forum. ive been a member of forums that are/were world wide, and have NEVER seen this kind of problem before. are there other kinds of measures? im sure the owners are even more unnerved to see them even more so than us members. just wondering.

Solution/Suggestion: Update the forum software to the latest version (3.6.7 PL1) and enable the require image verification when registering. The image verification should block all bots. The current version MIGHT have the image verification but I can't remember what version it was implemented in. Also it's very important to keep the forum software updated to prevent exploiting and other various hacks.

Check this one out if you haven't already: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=211647

They also suggest to change the font that is being used in the image verification image.

Yep... Ive even added a spam field...which kinda worked for like 2 weeks....:laughing6

When I get time...(never) Ill upgrade to 3.6(Ive been saying this since it came out) It supposedly has a better captcha system, but most people still had the same problem. Its not just bots, its live humans.

My forum was being flooded with bots 5-10 per day for about 2 weeks. We upgraded to 3.6.x and haven't had a bot register/post since. :eh:

If you watch and check the online member list, it almost appears as if there is someone that is physicaly creating the account and watching the thread in question. Often Ive found the post and seen the 'account' sitting there online.

ban the host email addy they're registering with. I've done it with numerous common emails on my forums and it's cut down on them big time. You don't have to ban just specific emails. You can ban any from one site, like @dealsonline.com, etc.

Also, look up the term "miserable users" on vb.org.
