Daily Craig: Props to the long snapper

Craig Roberts returns to KPRC 2 with his 'Daily Craig' column.

Scanning the sports headlines..OHIO ST. WINS. Astros lose but make it close. TEXANS PREPARE FOR THE REAL DEAL. That's what we had to chew on but the REAL STORY is about the guy from Baylor who bends over, looks behind him and hikes a football. You want a BIG STORY? Try Jon Weeks extending his deal with the local pro football team. Jon is the long snapper. You have a job title and I have had several in my 40 years doing what I do.

I always thought it would be weird to tell your kids you are a NOSE TACKLE. Your dad does what? The other odd job is LONG SNAPPER. Snapper is on the menu at your fish emporium. You hike the ball to a kicker and/or a punter? Cool. But here is the killer. He makes a boat load of money. Not JJ Watt money but almost $800,000 a year in a town that goes easy on the pocketbook. He got a $225,000 bonus and I assume he sent the signed contract back with the proper spin.

I have talked to Jon several times and I know he works hard. YOU try snapping a ball almost 800 times since 2010 with large dudes trying to kick your snapping hands. In grade school we had a rule -- "No dumping center". They don't have that in the NFL. Jon once had two bad snaps in one game. The Texans beat Tampa Bay in 2011 despite the bad hikes. No one can remember if he has had any bad ones since.

The Texans Grille has menu items named for players. How they missed Jon Weeks Snapper is beyond me.
