Thumbs up SHNF "WEST SIDE" CLEANUP WORK DAY 10/3/15

OK MotoHouston, "it's TIME!" Time to clean the west side trails in the SHNF that have been closed for a very long time. We will be meeting at Kelly's Pond in the SHNF on OCTOBER 3, 2015 at 8am sharp to clean the west side trails so we can get the forestry service to reopen them asap. It will not happen without people that are willing to give up a Saturday and come out and HELP! This will be an all out effort to cut out well over 100 fallen trees, move debris and limbs, etc off the trails, cut away overhanging limbs and cut shrubs that have overgrown onto these trails. This is going to take a massive effort on our part and need people, people, people badly if we are going to get them open.
PLEASE plan on participating so we can reclaim our right to ride these trails.
Bring a bike, bicycle, 4 wheeler, or walk. Bring a machete, whoopers, loopers, or any non-gasoline powered tool you have that can cut, slash, or mutilate a overgrown shrub or limb.
LET'S RECLAIM OUR RIGHT TO RIDE THE WEST SIDE!

Thanks Hail, we're starting to get a good crew together to start work on the west side. Would love to see a bunch more sign up and see if we could get it all done and open, but we'll see who really want's more riding area and how quick they what to see it open. Cooler weather is almost here, let's get it open so we can enjoy the nice weather and ride the west side, need to take away the over crowding of the east side riding. This is the only way to ease the chances of meeting someone coming the opposite direct is double our riding area out there. ANYONE else want to HELP?

At least with the trail cleaning I have an excuse to stop every 10 minutes.

This is what a TWT member said about working trails last Friday====

We went out to the west side near the FM 1791 trail head Friday and cleaned the trail for about 5 hrs. I'm here to tell you first hand that the trail I rode was in HORRIBLE shape. We went maybe 3/4 of a mile down the trail and worked in one area on about 5 trees which took all the time I had. Doesn't sound like a lot, but in one spot there were three large trees laid over each other with one laid directly down the middle of the trail, add on top of that the fact that I'm not even related to Paul Bunyan, it was difficult for me to make what I felt like would be an acceptable dent in the trail clearing process. There are definitely many more hours and more work days needed to get the all the trails back to rideable conditions from what I could tell.

I plan to try and be out there for a few hours with y'all Saturday. Keyword is PLAN as I have weekend coverage, so they could call that morning and I might not be able to show up.

Either way, I'll make more efforts toward working on the trails whether its this weekend or whenever I'm available.

Hope to see y'all there. FYI, I will have a chainsaw and have been to the class. I will also be bringing a four wheeler.

If work allows it, I will be out there with my 4 wheeler too.

Do we have to pay the $5 ride fee to work?

Don't think there a fee for volunteers on workdays??? You're working for them and the forestry service gets $22.50 an hour funding for your volunteered hours.

We will be there for the next one, but we have the pro-challenge this weekend... Sorry.

thanks Dave, I'm headed out tomorrow morning to try and survey as many trails as I can to see where the most damage has been done. If there as many fallen trees as I'm thinking, maybe one long, hard ride.
