From what he told me is that the truck ran a red light and hit him. I didn't ask for more details but this is crazy in the course of a week and a half 6 riders have gone down from our group and 1 passed

I beg to differ...riding with your head on a swivel, anticipating/being vigilante and counteracting someone running a red light is a way to not be run over.

Riding like you own the road, not paying attention, thinking other ppl see you, and thinking everyone obeys traffic lights/laws will all get you killed or hurt.
