R.I.P. to the rider and condolences to the family.

According to the general public, all us riders are a bunch of speed demon hooligans; news media companies seem to have a bad habit of "reporting" on what people are open to hear.

I've taken a fondness for watching motovloggers and ride videos, and I'm sure disappointed at the number of people who ride like they're in a video game -- and flaunt it. On the other hand, I've done my fair share of stupid s#*t and looking back I'm kinda glad to have gotten tickets instead of ending up in the morgue or a wheelchair. Also glad to hear that so far no-one on this thread has made some asinine [sic] comment about darwinism (etc) - most of us have gone through that "stupid" phase and it could have been any one of us, myself included.

Condolences to the family. I tend to ignore the speed part of these reports as cager tend to consider any speed faster than them as excessive or high. The tables DPS uses to calculate speed are designed for cars not much lighter(lower friction coefficient)which slide way futher than a car at the same speed.

As for splitting, I filter at stop lights, seldom split on the freeway, but when I do, to hear them tell it Its like I'm flying by the cages at 100plus,really even though I'm generally really just at a walking pace.

I believe he was speeding... especially since investigators confirmed he was on a stolen bike.

What's funny is how many of you who had made the comments in the past about thieves getting what they deserve ... guess none of you are in here commenting...

Btw, this comment is not directed completely to you crazi

Dang... I hate seeing this happen. RIP, and thoughts/prayers to the family.

I too, like others, have gone through the invincible, nimble, wreckless stage. I recently went riding with a local group here in Houston, and they were riding aggressively in traffic on i10, 610, and surrounding freeways. I thought it would be a nice, typical ride. You know, staggered form, maybe a couple blips of 100 in a reasonably safe spot, stop at destination, talk bikes. I ended up bailing from the group. Two riders went down that night. One didn't make it.

Ride safe, all. Cars/trucks aren't looking for bikes as is. Adding speed, among many other things, to that doesn't help.

Wow! So that is what happened. I came through there around 11:30am only the charger was there and a bunch of cops and tow trucks. The right lane was closed off. Since I didn't see the bike I assumed the charger got busted for running from the police.

Rip to the rider even if he was at fault a loss of life is still a big deal. Be cautious. I'm still gonna split lanes but I accept the risk of doing it.

That is true, alhough a cop friend said he can write you up for reckless driving if he chooses. The law is not really gray because technically you are passing on the right which is only legal if a car is stopped or turning left. I am not condemning anyone for doing it. I was stuck in a 5 mile long jam on 59 south this morning in the cage and if I had been on the bike I might have been tempted.

If cars are stopped or traffic's crawling, that's one thing. Doing it when traffic is moving at least posted speed is stupid.

Westpark tollway is not congested at 11am unless you have a dumbass that shuts it down for crashing his bike

True if traffic is going posted speed I usually won't split unless some dumb cage almost hits me. It astounds me at times how little attention people pay when driving a huge SUV.

"Lane splitting is gray not legal or illegal."

I'd suggest your read over the traffic statutes a bit closer...

" 19. Can I ride my motorcycle between cars in traffic?
The law doesn't specifically say one way or the other, but there are several statutes that may come to bear depending upon the circumstances, i.e. right of way, obligation to drive in a single lane, signal intention, passing with safety, etc. Motorcycles are considered equally as cars regarding traffic laws, so the single lane, signal intention and other statutes in the Transportation Code could come in to play.

The main statute that makes "lane splitting" illegal is Transportation Code Section 545.060, entitled "Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic."
An operator on a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic:
shall drive as nearly practical entirely within a single lane; and
may not move from the lane unless that movement can be made safely."

Define safely or practical, as usual if an officer wants to generate revenue or otherwise harass you the law is written so that it is their call on what constitutes an infraction.
