If you buy the vehicle from a licensed dealer, the tax is 6.25% of the sales price. If you buy from a private party, such as a friend or relative, the tax is 6.25% of:
the sales price, if you paid 80% or more of the vehicle’s standard presumptive value (SPV); 80% of the vehicle’s SPV, if you paid less than that amount; or the certified appraised value, if you paid less than 80% of the vehicle’s SPV and you get a certified appraisal.

They don't have to. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege. You sound more and more like a liberal every day..

A privilege that you have to pay them to take advantage of, only they have no competition, so they can charge you WTF they want with no explanation for why it is the price they ask.
Why do I have to renew the thing, yet don't have to even show up, take a new picture, take another test...no difference, just pay us so you can keep driving legally...WTF? Did I somehow cost them 6 dollars a year by continuing to keep the card I already paid dearly for?

Does no one else see that the whole thing is a BS racket?

The competition is the next state, if you don't like the states policies, you are welcome to move elsewhere. No different than choosing Target over Walmart really.

Well Texas seems to be about on par with most other states as far as over the residents. I'd imagine other countries are worse. What's left? Suicide?

They even have a panhandlers license now. Isn't that some bullshit?

shiiiiit, next time i need to renew, ill just tell them get back with me in 45 days.....still waiting on my tax return (filed in January) and all the government will tell me is "come back every 45 days". If it works for the IRS it should work for the DMV.

Is panhandling a privilege since you need a license for that too?

I think the whole "driving is a privilege" thing is some the government drives into your brain from an early age to keep people from revolting.

It's funny you guys talk a big game about being republican, but are in favor of more government oversight and taxes.

There is no such thing as a state license for panhandling

Maybe not from the state, but still the government. Still another example of the evil empire taking something that should be a right and gradually turning it into a "privilege" that you need to obtain a license through them for.

Breathing air will be a privilege before you know it.

If you do not know whether your city requires a panhandling license, check with the local police department or city hall.
