Sport bike enthusiasts find solace

By Tony Sakkis
Correspondent* *

Published June 30, 2005

LA MARQUE — Marlon Brando had it all wrong. It wasn’t the Wild Bunch you had to be careful of. It wasn’t the guys on the loud, noisy bikes with all the leather.

No. It was the other guys.

The ones on the nice, neat quiet Japanese bikes.

Somehow, during the past 30 years, it’s become fashionable to ride your decked-out Hog dressed as if you’re just about to rob a liquor store. It’s become acceptable for grown, mature captains of industry to plop the “old lady” on the back of a chopper and head off to a biker rally.

Where once looking straight at a biker dude was like looking at the sun (and you did it only for a brief instant lest you became toast), he’s a mainstream, tax-paying, perhaps even over-productive member of society.

Somehow, though, the guys who used to ride the nice normal Japanese bikes have turned into the tough guys. It’s the Hondas, Kawasakis and Yamaha riders — the guys who ride fast bikes, not the cruisers — who are the contemporary Wild Bunch. Somehow, black leather and the jackhammer sound of a Harley are in the mainstream. Japanese bikes, helmets and T-shirts are on the fringe.

Go figure.

But one man, in particular, wants that to change and bring it around full circle.

“It’s kind of swung the other way,” says La Marque’s Chris Junemann. “The rich, older guys buy choppers and big twins and ride them now. It’s okay to ride a cruiser. It’s popular and you’re not an outlaw.

“Sport bikes have always been flashy. What you see now is a sport bike passing you at 120 mph and you get mad. That’s not what we’re about. Most people have a bad outlook on the sport bike community.

“A lot of people think people who ride sport bikes are punk kids. There are people who do stunts, but we don’t condone that kind of thing. Anything we do, we do in safe, controlled circumstances. We certainly don’t condone it in public places.”

But sport bikers do have a PR problem: Ever seen a sport bike pass you on the freeway? Doing a wheelie? With the rider perched on the front handlebars?

Strange as it sounds, it happens all the time on the Southwest Freeway, where sport bikers seem to do a lot of showing off — and scaring — the local traffic, which is not so good for the image of other sport bikers.

So what Junemann has done is create a venue and an outlet for the persecuted and disenfranchised; the innocent sport bike riders. It’s a virtual place to hang out.

Looking at the site, it’s hard to imagine a better, more responsible group of people. There’s a board for new members to introduce themselves, a board with activities, ranging from organized street rides through the country to barbecues.

There is also a technical string and a string for those interested in AMA Pro racing and international racing. And, yes, there’s a section for “stunters,” where if you want to learn how to pull a wheelie, they can help you with that, with the understanding that you only do it in a controlled environment.

In Junemann’s world, there’s always something going on for you and your sport bike — as long as it’s polished and respectable.

“There are rides probably every other day,” said Junemann. “You’ll see lists of where people want to ride. And we have meets almost every week. Last week, we had 20 to 30 bikes. It started because I’m a moderator of a site and it just wasn’t big enough (for sport bikers). Here, no matter what you ride or how you ride it, there’s room for you.”

Well, no riff raff, please. And if you’re a big V-twin rider, you might do better at a slow and old guys club.

Or, better yet, at a golf course.

Well the thing was, we were trying to get all types of bikes in the picture but things didn't go as planned. We were going to have a dirtbike in the pic also but Atomic John was taking forever on his lunch break so we said screw it and just took the picture with what we had. This site isn't only for sportbikes so that's why there's an HD in the pic.

2 reasons:
one is that nobody else would show, critique it all you want, but I showed for support.
two is that there is a cruisers forum that I am trying to build up a bit by spreading it around.

show up next time , I'll stand out and take the photo, see if it upsets me :-)

had to edit for another reason, :
I ride mine like I stole it, narrow chicken strips testify :-)
