Texans prepare for Saturday?s preseason opener
KPRC 2 sports producer Adam Wexler was also at Houston Texans practice Thursday morning and here are his observations:
The Texans were inside the practice bubble for Thursday's workout.
Both quarterbacks got some work with the first unit.
Ryan Mallett struggled in some 11-on-11, missing most of his five throws, his one long gain was a medium deep throw to DeAndre Hopkins down the left sideline. A.J. Bouye had nice coverage, but Hopkins just reached over his head to snag it out of the air. That is the special part of Hopkins' game.
Brian Hoyer had a strong 2-minute drill working with the first unit. Nice throw down the middle to Cecil Shorts, who wiggled for a big gain. Scored on a nice throw to Garrett Graham on a crossing route in front of Andre Hal.
Mallett on a Hail Mary to Uzoma Nwachukwu, who rose up and got the ball in his chest/hands, but when it bounced out, Jumal Rolle picked it off and took it out of the end zone before sliding down at the 5-yard line.
Brandon Deaderick with a batted pass-disengaged from Cody White to knock down a Tom Savage attempt. Savage followed up with a nice out to Nwachukwu.
Mallett goes deep to Hopkins down middle, he was behind Charles James and hauled it in, in stride, at the back of the end zone.
One of the plays of the day came from Chris Polk. Savage was looking for him in the flat to his right.
The throw was off target. Stevie Brown dropped off his man and looked like he was going to pick it off.
Polk darted to his left and jumped in front of Duane Brown, brought the pass in and headed up field for a nice gain.
Doing some goal line, late game, situational work, Mallett tried to hit Shorts at the front pylon, but Kareem Jackson was to break it up.
Hoyer with the second unit, same situation, he steps up in the pocket, finds TE Mike McFarland over the middle. McFarland is the tallest guy out there, he just reaches up and grabs it.
After practice, Texans owner Bob McNair was asked if the team would consider Ray Rice. ”I’d have to talk to the guys in the locker room, because it’s always about the team," McNair said. "I think we have four good running backs here, I'm not sure he's better than any of them."
He added, "I haven't seen any other team try to sign him, so that should be an indication of where he stands."
