well it's your head you have to make the choice. generally it's 5 yrs of use. the oils from you hair and sweat can also break down the "stryofoam"

but arai has a 5yr manuf. warranty from date of purchase.(i think) not manuf.

stunting is no more dangerous then the track, it's all about time and place where you do it. prolly less cuz of the speeds involved.

That's what I thought initially but needed some confirmation that it was indeed bodily fluids that degraded the integrity of the lid.

My oldest is 7 years (HJC imagine that), but it's only worn at HRP in a cage. My newest is 2 years (RF1K) and I am thinking of replacing it already(Spec1R Extreme).

Thanks for the confirmation.

I like my HJC CF just fine, and it did fine in a 50 mph impact on asphalt. Took a small chip out of the CF and scratched the shield edge. It has a quick release shield that is stupid simple.
It also has zero lift or buffeting at triple digits.

My wife has a Scorpion 400 and likes it a lot, a little better ventilation than her KBC but about the same fit.

I was told by a rather knowledgeable sales person that the five year rule was based on the the date of manufacture because the Styrofoam loses its sponginess with age. Think of how the Styrofoam coolers get brittle as they get older.

Not picking on 50cc chick but the "age" of the foam makes more sense to me than the usage. If that was the case then the helmet's life would vary quite a bit. A daily rider would wear his/her helmet out much faster.

I'd like to know for certain what the answer is.

You bring up a great point. Now I am wondering the same thing.

No problem...I said the interwall (meaning the foam) will basically dry rot after awhile.
However I never thought to look at the date of manufacture and go by that rather than the day you buy it. Guess you learn something new everyday :icon_bigg

not to discount the above info:

from arai's site

"Like most major helmet manufacturers, Arai subscribes to the Snell Memorial Foundation benchmark of five years as the suggested usable lifespan of a motorcycle helmet. Why? Think of a helmet in terms of your body. No matter how good it may look, or how well you take care of it, age still takes its toll. Even with minimal use, a helmet is affected by things like the acids and oils in sweat, haircare products, pollution, exposure to UV rays, etc. "

"All Arai helmets are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, and are serviceable only for the properly fitted* first user for 5 years from date of first use, but no more than 7 years from date of manufacture. It should be replaced within 5 years of first use."

Well that's good to know. But it also supports the age theory to an extent. If Arai won't warranty it past 7 years then make sure your new helmet isn't more than two years old when you purchase it.

yeah, the age argument has some validity and makes sense.

Good stuff to know. Thanks for looking it up.

I know the various track day programs specify 5 years from the manufacture date. They could care less when you bought it.
