KTM advice....

I need some advice on the KTM I picked up over the weekend. It's a new 500 exc. suspension is already on order.

What should I be thinking about in terms of priorities? Some initial thoughts:

1. I want to keep the bike quiet so nothing crazy with the exhaust.
2. I've read about de-smogging the bike. Good idea or don't worry about it?
3. It doesn't have a skid plate. I need one. I'd normally do an aluminum skid plate but I've read about composite material and a quick release for maintenance. Thoughts?
4. Stocking gear seems really tall. Is it my imagination?
5. Where do I get a sticker so I can ride it in the forest?
6. I'm aware of the service required after 1 hour of riding; it will go back this week for new oil and a once over.

I don't think Curt is concerned about buying 2 $16 dollar stickers. your friendly staff at Cycle Shack North should have stickers as well....on the way to the forest....pretty convenient.

Im sure the stock gearing is waaaay tall for the forest....if you are not getting into at least 3rd in the forest then the gearing is off. Since that bike is street legal and an EXC(endure-cross country) Im sure its off as suspected......looking forward to seeing you out there man!!

i love my '16 500exc. already has 8 hours with 2 oil changes already lol. im going to stretch the third oil change out as the 2nd oil still looked new, even tho the process is so simple. gearing is tall.

be carefull man, went for a slow cruse though the bayou trials and i already have what looks like fork oil leaking from the left fork :( taking it back to mainland tomorrow when they open.

How strictly is this enforced? Must I wait for a sticker before I venture into the forest? I'd rather not wait almost 3 weeks!

Given that there is only a few Rangers that patrol the National Forest....the chance of getting caught is pretty slim. But I have seen Jason (the Ranger that is out there the most) at the trail head checking only once. If you get caught Im sure he will NOT go easy on you.

Call Wild West Honda or Cycle Shack north to see if they still have the FY15 stickers. They are the only ones in Houston to carry them, despite what the TX Off road website says.

most likely not, i just plan on changing out the tires to street and maybe a slip on or full exhaust later on (hoping that will help the popping on decel so i dont have to de-smog it) the seat is hard and will change that too later. other then that i have enjoyed all 8 hours so far and hope the fork issue is fixed easy and/or under warranty. if not, ill be rageing to WP.

I stay in first, sometimes second for most of the forest. I must be slow.

I was stopped for sticker and spark arrestor check on more than one occasion by GAME WARDEN....not a park ranger. I wouldn't take that risk...but to each their own. However, it was hunting season every time I was stopped.

Because I am such a giant, I have to get an upgraded suspension out of the gate. I shouldn't have any leakage issues as a result.

Motorcycles Unlimited will be doing my suspension upgrade. They've done the same to all my other bikes.

+1 in the rear. I really should be in second more but just being lazy with my shifting, never saw a spot for 3rd though.

Suspension for sure.

Save up for it's brother. You will want another one just because it's nice to have choices
