Anyone ever ride to Austin?

Or the Austin area? Wanted to visit some friends down there and was thinking about taking the bike.

Eh, just a thought as of right now.

yeah i rode there....i went to san marcos to meet some friends and then off to austin......i went I-10 W and then went through Luling for the scenic route then jumped on the main road there to Austin.......really nice ride, only stopped once for gas in sealy. Took like 3 1/2 hours to get to san marcos cause it was my first time there, then another 20 min to austin!!!!!

its a fun ride, you got a couch for a seat. just make sure to give the bike some rest every 150 or so miles.

Assuming that this is your first long trip, if you take the highways it's not as fun but its certainly faster.

Highway 71 is better than 290 as far as timing, and I like the area better.

If you are going thru lulling there is extremely good bbq at lullings bbq. Only bad thing about going thru lulling is that you just added about 1.5-2hrs to your trip just for bbq.

Stop and stretch at least once to minimize impact on your back. Yes even if you are in shape you'll feel it.

If the winds are honking prepare to be hurting by the time you get there, and you will probably find out if you helmet is a good fit or not.

ohh and that backpack, strap it to the bike and not your back.

Go early or late to avoid the heat. Drink lotso water. the rule of thumb is, if you don't need to pee right now.... you aint drinkin enuff.

By Me:

From I-10 West take the main Sealy exit and proceed north on Hwy 36 through town. On the far side take a left on Hwy 1094, columbus road, to New Ulm. In New Ulm turn left on 109 / 1291 heading southwest to Frelsburg. From Frelsburg head up to Lone Oak continuing on 1291 through some of the best 90 degree sweepers, but watch out for gravel in a couple of turns. Follow 1291 to Fayetteville. Turn left on 159 in Fayetteville and head out on this fast sweeping road towards LaGrange. At Hwy 237 jog left, then immedietely right on 2981. This second rate pavement road is fun and fast with no traffic, but it can tax the suspension. Make a left on 2145 heading Southwest until you hit 77. Make a right on 77 and go north to 153. Left on 153 towards and thru Winchester until you hit 2104. Turn left towards Smithville and down the steepest downhill in this part of the state. Wave as you drive by my little country place and make a right into Beuscher State Park. Follow the park road through 13 miles of one lane, shaded (great in summer), winding undulating concrete until you are spit out on near HWY 71 just shy of Bastrop. This is mostly roads you'll see riding the MS150 bicycle ride. Good scenery, and enough curves to keep you entertained on the way to Austin.

By Train460:

hello friends
that is the way (Mostly) that i take to austin with a slight change.
In sealy go north on 36 a few miles past 1094 to 949 left. great road take it till catsprings and right on 1094. a little longer but a neat road
In bastrop. after being on 71 for a couple miles after leaving the park hit 969 right. take it all the way to 35 in austin.
only way to go. once u take the 969 u won't go 71 any more.
later

Related - good roads on the west side:

From Sealy
North on 36
Left on 949 to Cat Spring
Right on 1094 to New Ulm
Left on 109 to Frelsburg
P/U 1291 thru Fayetteville to 237
Right on 237 to 290
Right on 290 to Burton
P/U 390 to 105
Left on 105 to 1155
Right on 1155 to Chappel Hill
Left on 290 (or back street thru town) to 1371
Right on 1371 to 1456
Right 1456 to Bellville

So, go up one way (71/10) and down the other (290) and you won't be bored at all.

I'd love to go man but this Saturday I'm leaving for Florida (not on the bike hah) for like a month.

I was going to ride out there sometime this week and see a friend before I go to FL.

Thanks for all the awesome responses

Yeah I was going to leave around 4am-ish and get there really early so I can spend the day with them. Then rest for awhile and head home that night, unless I can find a place to say. but that is unlikly.

I was thinking about just taking the quickest way there and the funnest way back.
