Judging by her avatar, she won't max out any suspension anytime in the near future...

Sorry Nesto, I know how you like them fat and full of grease, but this chick is out of your normal pool of trailer park trash-hippy smellin-butter lovin-goldschlager chugging-quarter pounder slammin-head trips.

I disagree. MSF has got to be to quickest and most effective way to get started riding ESPECIALLY if you have no experience.

That doesn't mean get the certificate and then hop on I-10. That means continue practicing in parking lots, then neighborhoods, then backroads, ect.

OP- I would take the MSF class and if you are comfortable riding those bikes, go ahead and try riding the harley.

Once you get your license, get some cones or tennis and set the MSF course up in a parking lot. If you aren't comfortable doing the MSF course on the harley after you completed it on the smaller bike, you may want to think about selling and starting smaller before you go out on the roads.

I think i'm done with my lunch now..appetite lost.

OP mentioned her GF bought the bike so I don't think she'd be interested anyway..

OP.. get a dirtbike.. learn how to ride.. learn how to control the bike when the wheels are coming out from under you .. if you want someone to ride with, give me a hollar.. don't mind them, they are just trying to make you feel welcome.

I agree. Nobody is saying that the MSF turns you into Rossi. But actual instruction is much different than trying to just go out by yourself and learn alone. MSF instructors are constantly reminding students to look through turns and such. If you don't have that (and don't even know to do it), you're going to develop some bad habits real quick.

I've thought about becoming an MSF instructor on and off for the last few years. A couple of my good friends in FL were instructors and kept trying to get me to sign up. It would be awesome and rewarding, I'm just not sure I'm ok with the time commitment.

This is not like riding a bicycle and upgrading to a mountain bike. If she can't even get her balance right, then she needs to start out with something smaller. Plus, if my significant other bought me a Harley, I am not selling... I'll hold out till I'm comfortable riding and then I'll attempt giving it a go.

Sorry I skimmed over the part where she was saying she couldn't get her balance right.
Still, I'm just saying I think MSF is a very cost effective way to start from square one. She can still buy the dirtbike after the course.

I agree that an MSF course will be extremely beneficial to her, but when someone starts to struggle to keep up with others in a class, they will not remember the important things.

OP sounds like a straight up beginner to it all, so some 4-wheeler & dirt bike exposure will be more beneficial to her before taking an MSF course (get more bang for your buck).

Right but since, if she does end up going on to get her M endorsement she will need to take MSF anyway.
Wouldn't it make sense to take it from the get go so they can teach her all the good habits she needs to practice?
There will also be a professional instructor there to help her with her balance issue and any other issue on THEIR bikes, so no worries about damaging her own.

I see where you are coming from, but still the class is only 2 days. With anything that short, it'd be really hard to hold on to all that information unless you are familiar with the basics.

Don't you have to have 5 years experience riding before you can become an MSF instructor?
