Local contestant makes it to top four in Scripps National Spelling Bee

A local contestant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee made it to the final four people before he spelled a word wrong.

The contestant, Siddharth Krishnakumar, is a seventh-grader from Pearland Junior High West. He misspelled “minhag,” defined as a Jewish religious custom.

In the end, two competitors tied to win the competition: Vanya Shivashankar, 13, of Olathe, Kansas, and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, of Chesterfield, Missouri, were declared co-champions.

In this year's national championship, 285 spellers competed for the title.
