F4i transmission problems

Well gotta track day next monday and seems I may have some transmission problems. During a high speed run i went to shift into 4th and the transmission didnt go into gear and made a load of grinding noises. I pulled the clutch in and coasted to a stop. The tranmission went back into 1st and limped home making sure I was gonna make it.

On another occasion, for some reason call me crazy; but crusing around I went over a bump and heard a bunch of grinding noises. Sounded like it came from the transmission.. not sure what that was all about..

Either way im wondering if this bike will survive a track day next monday.. Hate to bring out the new bike, dont want to lay her down!

Any thoughts on the transmission?

when's the last time you changed your oil?

what kind of oil are you using?

sounds like maybe you "neutral shifted" i believe is the term....are you sure you FULLY kicked it into gear?

and truthfully.....i'd rather ride the bike that functions 100% then to risk my life and ride something that may have problems. (considering that you do have full coverage insurance of course)

changed probably 100 miles ago, honda HP4 synthetic blend...

Was just reading about the f4i tranny, you gotta split the cases to get into it.. geez i dont have the room/tools to be doing that.. probably not even the skill.

The transmission feels very "soft?" It shifts up and down extremely smooth, you can barely feel it click, you can feel it, its just really really soft... Dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

hard to say. when i had my old f4i it shifted pretty smooth as well, even after being beat up by the pavement a few dozen times. the only thing i could guess is that maybe you got caught between gears while shifting and on the gas.....or maybe time for a rebuild.

i'd take it to a professional and have them check it out before you hit up the track with it. don't wanna go shootin 170mph down the straightaway and realize, "oh , my tranny just took a , now i gotta make it around the whole track in 6th gear"

better to be safe than sorry.

have you dropped it on the shifter side. When I have had that kind of problem it has always been bent shifter forks or worn shift dogs from shifting without a clutch.

edit whatever I wouldn't take that bike to the track as your problem may become someone else's problem if you miss a shift in front of them.

Rode it around this morning... ever heard of clutchless downshifting lol??

I was coming to stop and when preloading the shifter downwards it will pop into gear when the rpms drop... happened on accident but it will do it if you are going slow enough... ever heard of that?

yes it will do it if you are going slow enough. if you kick it hard enough it will do it going fast too, not good for it.

and i dont think you have a big problem. my f4i does this sometimes when i have it idled up high and i try to go into first from a dead stop. it grinds for a second then goes back into neutral, i just let out (yes let out) the clutch alittle and kick it down again and it works. I rarely with anything but 1st gear, but i've heard of that happening and it does it on high idle to me in first.

If you do end up having to split the cases its not bad. If your somewhat mechanical and have a manual. That engine splits top from bottoma and the tranny is easy to get to. Worse case you have to replace a shift fork(or all 3 if you want) and maybe a gear. The forks are about 20 bucks each and the gears run about 45 depending on which one. Just saying worse case. Hopefully you get it worked out.

I heard the worse part is taking the motor out of the frame.. or what a tech said was to actually like the frame off the motor is the easiest... I dont have a hoist though

naa. its easy .

worst case, if 1st gear is good on your bike we could work a trade :icon_bigg (all i need is first )

my motor dyno's 76 with jacked up fuel to air (missing exhaust sensor) and lack of power commander is all that holding it back. but the motor is strong, its all electronics that made it weak.

Its all easy...You dont need a hoist...it drops out of the botton..put a jack under it and slowly let it down.
