i dunno about illustrator, but i could do that in photoshop.

i would do the sea as a backround layer, using some kind of filter. (wind? most likely)

then use a gradient tool to make a green layer. cut along the border and presto!

for the white along the border, i would just use an airbrush tool and more or less freehand it, except using the border in a seperate layer as a guide.

from there its easy street. i dont know if any of that makes sense in illustrator.

i dunno if photoshop can save in the format you need (probably can, but im not sure) if it does, ill do your project for $50. lol, but seriously.

I know exactly what you are going through. I was ready to throw out my laptop a few times working on Illustrator.

I have ALL the CS Suite books but man, Illustrator is tough. I wish I could help.

I'll wait to see if anyone can help before I go and flip that book open. I may not go to bed otherwise...

I would say, either draw the outline by hand or save the image you have as a eps and copy the thing into it then cut it out. The color is the easiest, you create a layer and then do the gradient in photoshop and copy it over. Wow, I really don't know how to even begin explaining what I think may do it... :laughing6 I don't know what I am talking about.

Good luck!

On a sidenote, what class are you taking? Is it in college? I would love to take a class but they are usually pretty dang expensive.

Welcome to the club of beginners. It is super frustrating knowing that what someone could do in 5 min, takes me almost an entire evening... Don't feel bad.

Now that you have the background, see if you can create another layer, do gradient on it and set the transparency. I haven't messed like this in Illustrator but that is how you'd do it in photoshop.

I thought they teach you how to do this actually in class?!

If you are allowed to do stuff in photoshop and have it, I'd do it there, then save it as an eps and simply import it.

To avoid crossing lines, make sure the lines has no holes, if yes, you may need to use mask. If there are no lines, in the toolbox, there should be a fill box on the bottom that shows you the color. Double-click that and chose the color to fill. The book states (yes, I got it out :BangHead: ) to 'select the word stroke on the control palette to link to the stroke palette'. Chose align stroke to inside.

Something like that.

Have you tried checking out any Illustrator tutorials? they can really help to teach you certain techniques very quickly.
