Is that a vent part of the helmet ? Hard to tell with the pic you posted

But go ahead and use it while you wear your tank top and gym shorts with flip flops to ride

CAN you use it? Sure. If the alternative is not using one then I'd use it (if you're choosing to wear one). I'd also start saving for a new one though.

Yes; you can and should wear it if you have no other choice. But you do have another choice.

Check with forum sponsors. You can usually grab a new helmet for under $80 if you aren't picky about color. It may not be a Shoei, but there are decent brands that will offer better protection than what you have now. Except ICON, I wouldn't give an Icon to an enemy.

You can also check www.sportbiketrackgear.com for closepouts. They have a few as low as $50 (or did) shipped to you without taxes.

You have a smartphone obviously; cancel your data for a month and pay for the helmet. Presto, you now have funds available.

It's all about priorities.

To me, it looks like its only cosmetic.

Ride with it. Its better than nothing at all. When you get some extra money, buy a new one.

Looks like it's on a vent. The vents have nothing to do with safety and everything to do with airflow. I wouldn't think twice about wearing it unless it's on the actual base helmet.

I'm about getting brain damage and like that. I'd buy a new one. I also wear gear riding my Ruckus, that fear of being even more brain dead or in a coma.

I know there are decent cheap helmets out there. I just never understand who spends thousands of dollars on a bike, to ride with a cheap (or no helmet at all) brain bucket.

Definitely start saving, maybe craigslist search some. May be just cosmetic but you really never know what kind of internal damage might plague that gear now. Maybe post a size, someone might have a crappy spare you can get or something like that. G-L lets hope you don't have the chance to test the soundness of that helmet this week.
Cheers

I don't believe internal damage would be an issue here. The collapsible EPS layer in a helmet won't be damaged from a drop unless there is a head inside the helmet to collapse it.

I'd be concerned if the outer shell was cracked, but I agree that from the picture it appears to only be a vent that was cracked, not the actual shell of the helmet. IMO, if the shell cracked that badly from a simple drop, it's time to find a new helmet brand.

Reminds me of the time I a chick with a busted condom. I knew it was torn, but she insisted I wear one and its all I had on hand. Fine

Now the lid. As far as I see its an attached part and doesnt affect the integrity of the lid if so.

I have raced in helmets with the same sort of damage. I would use it for sure. I still use a helmet that the whole back vent came off. I am not as worried about my head as some though, it is pretty thick as I have been told more than once.
