Astrodome At 50: Celebrating Houston History

Thursday is the Houston Astrodome's 50th anniversary and you can be a part of the celebration.

On April 9, 1965, a sellout crowd watched the Astros beat the New York Yankees in an exhibition game. A half-century later, the Astrodome now stands empty as city officials decide what to do with it.

But on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., visitors can celebrate its birthday at a free party in Carruth Plaza at NRG Park (northwest corner of Astrodome). There will be free cake, Dome dogs, and souvenirs. There is also the opportunity to be taken inside the Eighth Wonder of the World for photos.

The party is free and open to the public. Guests may park free of charge starting at 5:30 p.m. in NRG Park's red lot, just northwest of the Astrodome and north of NRG Stadium.

Share your Astrodome photos by emailing share@click2houston.com or uploading at www.click2houston.com/share.

Tell us your favorite Astrodome moments in the comments section below or by using #KPRC2 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and we may use them in our newscasts.
