New rider/msf class this weekend

Hi all,

Been lurking on the forum for a while but this is my first post. Taking the first step towards getting a bike by taking the beginners course in Magnolia at MTC this weekend. No previous motorcycle experience, any advice? Also, will anyone else be there taking the test?

This forum has been a huge help with all the information I've learned in the past few months. It's really nice to see such a wonderful community of Houston riders as I'm new to the area (Woodlands). Looking forward to the class and will make sure to post an update as to how it went!

I didn't take my class at that place, but when i took my class, my only experience with a motorcycle is riding back seat with my cousin on a scooter...

MSF is a great way to learn. They start you off real slow and slowly progress.

That is pretty much the same exact progression we did starting pg. 76.

I do know how to drive stick shift which kinda helped me

Good luck enjoy and be safe! see you on the streets!

I took the course last year. It really started from the basics and built on top of that. I never knew how to drive a manual car whatsoever in addition to not knowing about bikes. I was always the passenger.

I had trouble shifting because I didn't know what the clutch did and would shift still hitting the throttle a bit. I was dubbed "sure-shifter". The bike would shut off on me because wouldn't use the clutch. Lol but once I realized what the clutch did... it was a no brainer. They kept telling me to use it but I was being stubborn. It helps if you put what you may think you know about riding out the window and listen to what they say. Everyone ends up having their own style of doing anything once you're out on the road... but just make sure you listen and follow their instructions to get the basics. They know what they're talking about. :-)

I've been in traffic, wet roads, out at night.... but I am taking the skilled rider course in may (the second part of what you'll be taking). I have trouble going at slow speeds so I want to get better at that using my own bike... being a 130 lb female makes the weight and size of the bike a little intimidating at slower speeds.

Hope it helps! Good luck!

They cancelled the class because they do not have an instructor available. Frustrating considering I took a weekend off from work which is hard enough as is. Might call Awesome Cycles considering that's what I see mentioned often on here. Hope it's not too late

Welcome. The test itself isn't really hard. I recommend that you get there early as you forfeit your time and money there if you arrive even 5 minutes late to class. As long as you pay attention and do what they tell you, you'll be okay. You literally have to not pay attention to fail.

Called Awesome Cycles yesterday afternoon, happened to get lucky that they had a cancellation earlier in the day and I was able to reserve the last spot. Anyone else going to be attending tomorrow?

I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

Just passed the course, I did better than I expected...

For any new riders out there, I HIGHLY reccomend Awesome Cycles. My intructors, Debbie and David, were very informative, professional, and hilarious. I learned so much in 2 days and had one of the best experiences of my life. I also made some good friends in the class that I can't wait to ride with.

Off to search for my first bike...

Congrats man. I took my class there at Awesome Cycles and had Debbie and Walter as well. You learn a lot especially when you show up and pay attention. Good Luck and have fun finding a bike. Let us know what you end up buying.
