My rat/sidecar

I got some garage time in this weekend, and just wanted to share.

Spent some time over my long weekend getting the sidecar setup on the rat. Still have a bit to go, as I need to do quite a bit of work on wiring, brakes, lighting, and paint, but the mechanical connections are all there and it's set up well enough for trips around the neighborhood.

Got some blocks built to get the frame height set properly, loosened all the mounting connections on the sidecar frame, and got everything put together:

11137704 1456320987992772 1410341894 n

11111329 932700026760815 2085079648 n

Got the body put back on, and then got to work on repairing the ammo can that was damaged when I wrecked in the dirt drags at the BMOA rally last may.

11111276 794467650660759 1690667718 n

Tack welded a piece of 5/16" rod on the inside to help keep the edge straight, worked surprisingly well. There was originally about 1" of deflection along that edge

11078858 406805722826208 509649255 n

And some extra metal was welded on to provide some extra thickness around the mounting points. The area that appears to have overlapping patches is where the original mount was ripped out. I cut a patch panel out of a different small ammo can, welded the patch in, then overlapped a second patch, offset from the first.

And for the first time in almost a year, both cans are back on.

Connor was ready for a ride.

kind of want to see it in action

I saw a dude with a huge truck bed tool box with a ladder with a similar set up. Always wanted one after that.

Yeah, if it's here in town, it's an old- BMW with nearly as many miles as my Venture and something like a 7 gal. gas tank. Old dude named Dan, it's his work truck. He's a neat guy, comes up to the Euro meet on it occasionally at Shepherd Park.

I still need to figure out how I'm going to get the sidecar brake setup. My stock rear master cylinder was designed to power both the rear and one of the front calipers, but I've done the de-linking with a new front master controlling both. I know I've got the capacity to run both off the rear master, but for purposes of control I'd much rather have it on a separate M/C. The other Venture ran the stock linked setup with both the second front and the sidecar brake operated off of the front M/C. It was odd, and incorporated a quick-disconnect fitting in the brake line running to the sidecar. The only time I could ever get much efficacy out of that brake was to bleed the line right before a ride.

I'm thinking I want to weld on a bracket and bolt on a second foot pedal with separate M/C dedicated to the car brake. This seems to be the preferred method from what I've seen on the rigs over at ADV rider.

Next up will be to install the HID auxiliary spot light on the sidecar and finally get all the wiring sorted, which will include installing a horn and turn signals.

Eventually, once I get my tubing bender finished, I'm planning on building a leading link front end for it, but that's probably a little above my skill set at the moment.

I'll donate my cbr brake system if you want to use it. I was going to use it for a stunt setup but I'm looking to sell my other bike. Let me know bro

I appreciate the offer! I think the only thing I actually need at the moment is a rear master cylinder and a pedal.

I'm thinking I'll just fabricate a pedal when I make a bracket, and then reuse the Brembo single piston caliper that's already mounted up. I've got a few 4-piston calipers that came off the front of the Venture when I upgraded to R1 calipers, but not sure that I've got room for something that large under the tiny 13" sidecar wheel. I'll also need to order a custom length brake line, but I need to figure out where the m/c will be located before I can measure.
