Yes and No. If we started putting resources into battery and solar cell technology like we do into other technologies, like say computer processors, then we could get there a lot quicker.

There is the Vectrix (www.vectrixusa.com) but I think it's still a little pricey.

In theory it's easier to create electric motorcycles because you don't have to worry about complex heating/coolings systems but it will probably have to happen to cars on a massive scale before we see anything usable.

So in the mean time we'll have to rely on companies like Tesla (www.teslamotors.com) to do it and make everyone else jump on the bandwagon. The Telsla Roadster: already on the road, 0 to 60 in 3.8, 200+ mile range, chassis by lotus. The roadster is 93K. A comparable gas car is supposed to be 300K.

Tesla has plans for a luxury line in about 2 years and then everyday cars a little bit after that. Their strategy is to start out fast and sporty for R&D and PR purposes. They'll sale higher margin cars to pay for research and then work out the details for mass production. They've also got some big names/minds behind them too.

They're using lithiums in most of them. Not sure what those have inside.

The performance characteristics of the motors are phenomenal. They can get so much HP and torque out of such a small space. And that power is available almost instantly, no waiting for high rpms. I think the Tesla site has a dyno of gas and electric so you can compare.

There's also an electric motocross bike. I've never ridden motocross so I have nothing to compare it to, but here's the specs:
